Malcolm X was a part of the same struggle as MLK but definitely coming from a different direction.

Here's part of Terence Blanchard's score from the Spike Lee movie.

Here's part of Terence Blanchard's score from the Spike Lee movie. It feels appropriate for Martin Luther King day

  • Anna Lucasta by Elmer Bernstein
  • Odds Against Tomorrow by John Lewis
  • Take a Giant Step by Jack Marshall
  • A Raisin in the Sun by Laurence Rosenthal
  • Pressure Point by Ernest Gold
  • The Lost Man by Quincy Jones (I like this one better than "In the Heat of the Night")

+ Alex North's unused music for Sounder.

[Gerald Fried's One Potato, Two Potato could/should be on this, too, but I haven't bought the CD yet]

Perhaps the only film music cue ever written specifically for and to evoke Martin Luther King is the brief and moving track "Dr. King," in Miklos Rozsa's score for "The Private Files of J. Edgar Hoover" (Track 16).

Taj Mahal's score for the film is wonderful as well! Highly recommended.
