I have a Hugo Friedhofer cd that was owned by actor David Ogden Stiers.

I have a few hundred LPs and probably close to 2000 CDs. It's an amazing collection but along the way I've sometimes thought that each new purchase just further divides the enjoyment value of the rest. Sometimes I long for my young teenage days when I had 40 to 50 LPs, nothing past 1969, and I knew every note on every one of them.

"....when I had 40 to 50 LPs, nothing past 1969, and I knew every note on every on"

Sounds like my collection now!

I rarely listen to the same recording of music more than a couple of times a year, so I would not get very far with only 50 albums.

Indeed. I'm the same as villagarden above. I fondly remember the 90s, when I had a select few number of cassettes, LPs and eventually CDs. I was so intimately familiar with each and every one. Now, with more than 2000 albums in my collection, and endless more available on streaming platforms, it's a different story. I'm guessing this is a very "normal" story for most of us.

I think I'm the opposite. As I get older I'm mostly only listening to favourites, that around 50-60 albums, with the rest mostly un-played. It's worth keeping them, as I never know what I might fancy listening to, & that's a real un-answerable question: how does the brain decide that it wants to listen to some music that you haven't even thought about for years.

I’m like that also I keep returning to some favorites over and over with some changes over time (the Harry Potter phase, the Jurassic Park phase, the Die Hard phase, Planet Of The Apes, Dirty Harry) but there are some that are always there like Conan, Jaws and it’s sequels, Poltergeist, Vertigo, Thief of Bagdad). Out of the 50-60 favorites I keep coming back to, I tend to listen to other scores only after I watch the respective movies or after I read some positive comments about them in these boards. Sometimes I force myself to listen to something different in an attempt to add variation.

One thing I noted is that I was usually able to immediately identify if the music in the album was different to the film, in the “Jaws 2” LP for example I could identify that the section Boats In Danger was a different take with a somewhat faster pace. Nowadays, even with both versions in the same album, I can hardly identify the differences among some alternate takes if not clearly described in the liner notes.

I feel guilty about leaving anything unplayed...

Yes, I have these "phases" too, definitely, a Brahms phase, or a Mahler phase, or a Miklós Rózsa phase, but even then I usually don't listen to the same recordings over and over. I has happened though that I listened to different recordings of the same symphony in a row. The CDs or download I bought over the years I consider mostly "core", I like them all and I listen to them all, that's why I bought them. That's why my collection is not overly large compared to some here.

And it CAN happen that I play an album several times in a row, especially if it strikes a note or I just want to explore that particular album. I don't have any "rules" for listening to music. Just recently I listened to "Tribute to Blade Runner" by Christophe Leusiau three times within a week, and thought it was quite interesting, as it is an obvious exploration of some of the same soundscapes Vangelis created for the original movie. (It sounds like "Blade Runner 2"). I listened to it on Tidal, but I think I'll add that to my personal collection.

I try to listen to every album at least once per year. With 120 (+~20 digital only) albums an easy thing for me.

During Covid-19 and working from home, I've taken the opportunity to listen through my soundtrack collection (700+ albums) properly over speakers, with very few albums avoided. I'm glad I've been able to do that, as it's confirmed why I bought them in the first place and it's been a pleasure to revisit most of them. However a few are weak and I understand why I virtually never listen to them, but I'm not one for selling them on so they stay in my collection for a revisit every few years...

Totally random fact about me that I usually throw out when asked this question;

I was born and raised in the shark bite capitol of the world--New Smyrna Beach, Florida, known in surfing circles as "The Constant Wave" due to the way the jetties create near perfect 24 hour surf conditions. I remember as a kid seeing the news vans parked near the beach, usually every weekend in the summer, with the junior reporter doing another story on another surfer who got tagged. When we were kids at the beach, my dad would start humming the Jaws theme and we would all run out of the water--it got to the point that I was so scared of sharks that I was afraid to take a shower!

Totally random fact about my collection:
The most I've ever paid for a CD was $65 for a used copy of the La La Land Independence Day set. The most I've ever made reselling a CD was $99 for a used copy of the La La Land Hook set.

1. Having not gotten a haircut since the pandemic began, I have, today, for the first time, been able to put it up in a Goldsmithian ponytail. Life goal complete.

2. My collection will, after I die, likely take up too much space in a local landfill.

Spock's got your answer right here:

I still play the end titles without Nimoy's voice over on a constant basis. I wanted it, I have it and it's a dream come true every time I play it.
