It is such a pity that this score has never been expanded and completely released as it's such a beautiful score. Definitely one of Barry's best.

So is a complete score possible, and if so, how likely are we to see it released? Was hoping for a release last year to coincide with the films 40th anniversary but it never came to be (unless it is delayed due to the pandemic).

Can come with a bonus penny.

Seriously though, one of my favorite scores by Barry.

Is there much missing? From my recollection it had all the major cues. What about the rerecording?

Just re-watched it last night. Felt like I had heard the complete score on CD. Seems the rerecording has most of it, for sure.

The actual album Barry prepared is a re-recording, so the cues as heard in the film are basically unreleased.

This score is so sublime and popular that I cannot conceive why it hasn't been released in complete form.

And as good as the Varése re-recording is, nothing will ever beat the film tracks, if available.

I'm still surprised that this hasn't happened yet. It seems to be one of Barry's most beloved works. Hopefully there's not an issue with the masters. It's one of my absolute favorites. I'd buy an expansion instantly.

The rerecording is good and I really enjoy listening to it but the Barry recordings are better and my preferred listening.

I wasn't aware the OST was a rerecording either. I thought it was just the tracks A Day Together and Theme from Somewhere In Time.

All I have is the John Debney version, and I certainly have no complaints about it. I only saw the film once on TV, decades ago.

I remember standing in the record store with both CDs in my hands (remember that?), trying to decide between them. I picked the re-recording for its expanded track list, and on the chance that the digital sound would be superior. I agonized in the store, but you probably can't go wrong with these two anyway.

Wow, surprised to hear the OST was also a rerecording. To my recollection it sounded just like the film score. Whats on the rerecording by Debney not on the OST?

As far as I aware, these are the tracks on the rerecording not on the OST:
Grand Hotel
Nineteen Twelve
June 27th
Room 417
A Day Together
Rowing
Razor
Coin
End Credits

Also the brief start of Total Dismay.

@ AJM - Thanks! Never heard this version. I see its still available for a reasonable price online. I'll have to nab it.

Glad to help. The rerecording is fairly cheap on some second hand market sites like Discogs or is still available on Varese's store. It is definitely worth picking up if you can get one, much better than any other Varese and Silva rerecordings of other Barry scores.

I honestly prefer the Varese, as I find it a better-sounding recording from an acoustical standpoint. The original album is much to dry and studio-bound for me. In fact I don't even own the original album, only the Varese!

Yes, but remember we're not talking about a reissue of the 1980 album here.

We're talking about the original film recordings and we don't know how the dynamics of the original score would sound on CD yet. It depends how its mixed and mastered.

Anyway, I say, bring it on.

Varese Sarabande recording.

MCA album recording.

Original film recording.

I'll take it all, especially for something as great as this.

Cheers
