MIDNIGHT COWBOY (2-CD)
Expanded Original MGM Motion Picture Soundtrack
Musical Supervision: John Barry
Everybody’s Talkin’ Sung by Nilsson

Quartet Records, in collaboration with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Capitol Records, Universal Music Enterprises and the Phil Ramone estate, present an expanded 2-CD edition of the iconic score for the landmark film MIDNIGHT COWBOY, directed by John Schlesinger in 1969, starring Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight, and winner of three Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

The musical score of MIDNIGHT COWBOY presented a new concept, widely used in the last decades, but not in the late sixties—a combination of songs and original music wisely developed into a perfect underscore. Renowned British composer John Barry, who had already won three Oscars in 1969, appeared under the credit of "Music Supervisor," but also composed a series of original cues and supervised the entire musical concept of the film, along with legendary American producer Phil Ramone.

The song "Everybody's Talkin’," written by Fred Neil in 1966, was selected as a main theme for the film, newly recorded with arrangements by George Tipton and performed by Harry Nilsson. It became an instant classic and ultimately a generational symbol.

For this new Quartet release, the classic 1969 soundtrack album has been mastered from first-generation master tapes on Disc 1 and supplemented with new mixes made from recently discovered multi-track tapes, that includes some alternate song versions, different vocals of the Nilsson song, and alternate and single versions prepared by John Barry of his famous original theme. On Disc 2 we have included the music (both songs and score) as it appears in the film, mastered from mono elements vaulted at MGM. Score and album were in part different recordings; the harmonica solos, played by Toots Thielman in the film, were played by Tommy Reilly on the album.

This collection has been produced, restored, mixed and mastered by Chris Malone, and the 24-page booklet includes authoritative and exclusive in-depth liner notes by Jon Burlingame.

Now this is big, wonderful surprise ... and whilst there's a lot of repeat material included, I'm very tempted.

The biggest question is: will it arrive before 01 January so as to avoid import tariffs? smile

BY FAR, the greatest release of the year.

(For me, anyway.)

Cheers.

I am interested in hearing the story of the recently discovered multi-track tapes. I hope you can share it?

Knowing Quartet I expected a lot of things, but four out of four is a record (even for them!).

And this release is like a miracle!

Wow, thanks Amer! This is great news!

I've never bought directly from Quartet - looks like the shipping to USA is almost as much as the CD cost.

Do they have a US distributor?

They had lots of things go missing earlier in the year when the post was screwed up at the start of the pandemic. They only do tracked courier shipping now as far as I know. It is expensive but there is no alternative as far as I can see unless you can get something down the line when other online outlets have stock. although there is no guarantee of that. I'm in the UK and got the last CD I bought then arrived the next day, which was better than waiting the months it took for The Thing to arrive earlier in the year. Given how few CDs I actually buy nowadays this will be a treat and whilst the additional cost annoys me I am prepared to pay it for the peace of mind it gives when the thing is trackable. Your mileage may vary...!

Quartet releases (provided they aren't limited) usually are available on Amazon quickly enough. At least on Amazon UK anyway, that's where I got my copy of The Thing and a few others down the years.

Never understood why this is so popular. The combination of that harmonica and too many vocals might be even more dreadful in such a long expanded form. Happy for those who like it though!

Great Quartet Releases! I am trying to order all of them too but the Quartet server is causing problems. I am especially pleased to see Midnight Cowboy as I have never purchased the CD release despite having come across it countless times. I always restrained myself thinking that SOMEDAY a proper release would come along, and NOW AT LAST IT HAS! Yippee!

I suspect it's popular with people who love the movie and don't hate harmonica.

I never understood Fred MacMurray cast as a romantic lead, but he was, so there you go. Life is full of unfathomable mysteries.

Quartet: Thank you for this. I am one of those who has been waiting for this for years. There were so many brilliant pieces of underscore that did not make the album, especially that closing version of the harmonica theme.

Also, the original album has always been one of my favorite John Barry albums. First, the album--songs and score--works wonderfully as an album. Secondly, the Barry pieces in a way is the anti-John Barry album: no repetition of themes, just five absolutely wonderful pieces of music with wide variety: the gut-wrenching harmonica theme, the outer space cue that doubled as underscore for Joe Buck's anguish, the silly dream sequence, the late-night cocktail mood, and the triumphant "Joe Buck Rides Again"--probably the best "western" cue Barry ever wrote for a non-western.

Phil Ramone has acknowledged that John Barry gave him his first credit as an album producer, but I have heard from various sources that it was for either Midnight Cowboy, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, or Ready When You Are, J. B.

How great that this unique soundtrack/score is finally getting its due with the film tracks, alternates, and a remaster of the LP program. Excellent release!
