In a MASSIVE announcement, Warners today announced that all their 2021 movie releases will drop day and date with the US release on HBO Max, where it will stream for 1 month, 4K and HDR included.

This is ALL of their releases, including Godzilla v Kong, Dune, Suicide Squad, and Matrix 4.

Note that this is a US only deal, because HBO Max is only available in here in the states.

This might be the beginning of the end of movie theaters. I hope not.

This is pretty cool since I now have HBO MAX for free with my new unlimited data plan that I just switched to on AT&T.

I just downloaded the HBO MAX App on my Fire TV and tablet and away I go:-)

Lets convert this to simple terms, the movie theater industry is down on their knees because a wholly botched and inept response to Covid by the US government, and Warner Brothers said, "yeah, lets kick em while they are down"

The studios see a vaccine coming, gotta act soon and destroy the theater business before they can get back on their feet.

yeah, sad, I will be back at the theater as soon as I can get a vaccine in my arm, and I will take that shot as soon as I can get it. I will support the movies that theater, always. This WB decision really is pathetic. And I am sure that directors like Denis V really hate it too, you make a large film, and the studio rents it to home on the first day.

I hear ya. For what its worth, of the films mentioned I don't see any of them making their money back domestically. I think the studios are looking to cut their losses and use the content to drum up new streaming customers.

I don't really care where the big budget superhero films end up or start out, nor do I care if they get their budgets slashed by 30 percent. If this tendency results in more smaller cinemas showing smaller or older films, maybe with director seasons the way London's NFT operates, without 20 or 40 minutes of advertising before the movie, and without 20 dollar popcorn buckets, then I'm all for it. The fact that so many retailers operate by mail now, the fact that so many businesses are content to save money by letting their people work from home, means that plenty of inner city cinema properties could survive and even thrive as nice and *refined* places to go.

I can't see how Warners goes back from this after 2021. I know they say it's a one year only thing but I have a hard time taking them at their word if HBO Max subscriptions go through the roof.

Well the really big money is still made in the theatres, so I'm thinking that the big budget films just won't get made for a while, as the studios won't get their money back. I suppose in a years time everything could go back to normal. The new Bond film, No Time To Die has an estimated budget of $250,000,000, so no wonder that MGM/Universal keep putting back the opening date. I wouldn't be surprised if it was next summer.
