Back on a Cassavetes jag, and I just realized he and Gena Rowlands are in this film.

And I was looking at Cassavetes on the album cover all these years. Who knew.

Thanks Bill, but this thread is about the film, not the score.

Do you like the film? Are you a John Cassavetes/Gena Rowlands fan?

It was june 2019 McCain got reviewed

Musicmad mitch
Machine Gun McCain / Gli intoccabili (1969) ... 2/10

I know, I'm back to my nothing'll please me ... type review, but this was a film I tried to like, to be involved in ... only to find my time was wasted. It was broadcast in a dreadful 4:3 P&S format and I'm sure this robbed the film one point ... at least. The opening/closing credits in W/S looked much better.

I think the film at approx. 96mins was seriously cut and breaking the film into parts (I went away for a few days ) didn't help, so perhaps a higher rating is warranted.

But the storyline, character motivations, acting, sets, dialogue ... almost everything was less than good. Acting honours go to Gabriele Ferzetti, whilst Britt Ekland looked nice (those who complain about her acting in later films, such as The Man with the Golden Gun (1975) should see this ).

I lost track of, or we're not told, who is the mother of Hank's son Jack ... but if it is meant to be Rosemary, presumably she did not know of Jack's fate when she aids Hank (and his new young bride!)

And, adding to the misery ... sorry to say: Maestro Morricone's score did nothing to help the film. I know the score well (from the initial Alhambra CD purchase as replaced by the Dagored CD purchase) and I'm not sure much of it was used in the film (at least, not in this version).

Bob DiMucci added:
Back in 2010, when Blue Underground released the 96-minute Blu-ray of the film, the IMDB listed a running time of 116 minutes for the film. The DVD Savant website noted at that time that "The IMDB lists a longer running time (116 minutes) but I also saw that the Hardy Gangster Film Encyclopedia carries that length too, as well as the specs on a European release of Machine Gun McCain. Apparently all these longer running times are false. Disc producer/distributor Bill Lustig informs me that the film never existed at a length longer than the one on this release -- that director Montaldo has confirmed that claims of longer cuts are incorrect."

I reviewed it thus:

Didnt mind McCain. Was certainly watchable.Very well constructed set piece heist. It shows the treacherous ambition of the bosses and i also liked how it showed the network of people on the lookout for cassavettes and eklund when they were on the run.A few tracks of ennios i recognised but it was probably one of his most badly-used scores. And florinda bolkan in another incredible dress with huge deliberate holes in it got the vote up.
Id give it 7.5 out of 10.

TG reviewed it sometime after.

Machine Gun McCain

I’m in trouble rating this because two very good friends have given it wildly different scores. I’d rate it higher than Mitch’s 2/10 but can’t bring myself to give it 7.5/10 like Bill.

There seemed to be two films going on, a proto-Casino with Peter Falk as Joe Pesci; and a chase movie that was sketchily drawn following the admittedly simplistic macguffin of the heist. And I’ve seen worse uses of a Morricone score, a lot of which was source. Neither part of the film was brilliant, but I floated along with it happily enough.

6/10...

You could assume 1) that she was not the mother - she would have been very young; 2) that she was the mother and did not know. If she was indeed the mother and knew, it seems like this should have been addressed in the film.

Overall, I enjoyed the film for what it was.
