Amazing British R&B vocalist Steve Marriott of the Small Faces, and later of Humble Pie, got his start as a kid playing the Artful Dodger in Oliver!

Supposedly, Oliver composer Lionel Bart was in the East End, heard Steve singing for spare change on a street corner, and said to himself, "I found the Artful Dodger!"

Lovely story, except it was Jack Wild, wasnt it?
Presumably was Marriott in the stage version?

I know Kathe Green sang for Mark Lester's voice and singer Elaine Page played a street urchin in the movie.

She did, along with her mate Helen Worth who is Gail Platt in Coronation Street.

When Steve Marriott tells the story, he says that Bart said that about him.

Maybe Lionel Bart said that to all the Artful Dodgers!
