Chickenhearted's McCabe & Mrs. Miller thread from a while back turned into a discussion on "snow Westerns." I thought I'd make that subject official here and see if we can get an inclusive list.

Mentioned already:

McCabe & Mrs. Miller
Will Penny
Track of the Cat
The Hateful Eight
The Big Silence
Death Hunt
Jeremiah Johnson
The Mountain Men
Butch and Sundance: The Early Years (maybe)
Wild Rovers (one key snow sequence, but maybe not qualifies as an all-out "snow western."
Man in the Wilderness (and, also, The Revenant)
Day of the Outlaw
Challenge to be Free
Across the Great Divide
The Far Country
The Last Buffalo
The Last Hunt

Does Breakheart Pass make the cut? Or is the snow in it not imposing enough?

EDIT: Yes, I would say Breakheart qualifies, especially by its second half.

UPDATE - As we enter the late fall 2023/winter 2023-24 season, here are additional titles from this thread (I still have some other suggestions here to check on):

Any Bullet Will Do
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Chuka
The Claim
Dark Valley
Monte Walsh (1970) (no snow, but it's so damned wintry in its feel and outlook, that I give it an honorable mention.)
The Rare Breed
Ride the High Country
The White Buffalo

Great topic - but I’m not sure all of those count.

As westerns, I mean.

Ha! I get the reference wot's referenced. Ricky_W's old warhorse. Although in this case I see his point. Mark fails to define "western" as he fails to define "snow".

I would add David Lynch's THE STRAIGHT STORY, in which an old man (Robert Fosters-Lager) pushes his lawnmower through some of the "New West", and mentioning - in a line cut from the theatrically-released version - the lack of slush at the roadsides nowadays, compared to what real winters were like in Nanook of the North.

The Last Frontier

A normal cavalry v indians western with Victor Mature, but, the last 30 seconds has snow. Does that count?

Was it slushy or still proper snow?

Well, good point. It came down heavy over Victor's head, but the overhead shot of the fort wasnt very white, so maybe it wasnt settling yet?

I reckon the appropriately named Michael Winterbottom's The Claim qualifies

The Ballad Of Little Jo. (1993 Western).
I've never seen it, but the cover of the Intrada CD might be the snowiest one I've ever seen.

Valdez is Coming presents us with a poser: Although most of it takes place in traditional desert/mountain locations, the climactic scene takes place with Burt Lancaster's Valdez standing against a snowy mountain vista while he faces nemesis Jon Cypher against a flat, rocky, desert scene. The memorable image of that snow during the showdown scene I think qualifies this movie as an honorary snow western.

Dances With Wolves also has a memorably snowy ending, so maybe it qualifies for honorary status too even if the majority of it isn’t snowy.

"Dances With Wolves" is not a western. It is white savior/noble savage kitsch.
