I do have questions for you learned members. I believe it has been posted before that Costner wanted Basil Poledouris to score his movie, but Basil was scoring another movie at that time. Does anyone know why Costner hired Barry? Barry really wasn’t known for scoring a lot of westerns. I also read I think in a FSM magazine that Costner did hire Poledouris for Open Range but then replaced him with Kamen. Any truth to this?
It is true that Poledouris was approached first but he was busy with something else. I don't think Costner was especially precious with who scored the movie. It was probably a case of going through who was available. I know he was delighted with Barry's score.
It started to look like a Costner-Wilson-Barry relationship was forming, because of apart from Barry then being on The Bodyguard, the three were teaming up to create Travels With Charley.
However, Barry's involvement on The Bodyguard fell though, Travels With Charley fell through, and what looked like a promising relationship didn't go any further.

Yes... I remember in Hollywood, before DANCES WITH WOLVES was released and went on to become the enormous success, some called it disparagingly "Kevin's Gate".
