This December, the KKL Luzern in Lucerne, Switzerland will be presenting the ‘Live-to-Film’ concert-version of this film.

However, with the way things are going, take this schedule with a grain-of-salt, despite the fact that the KKL Luzern Concert Hall just began their season this past October 17th with a ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ Live-to-Film concert with a full-orchestra and no audience-indoor-capacity limit (audience were required to wear masks).

A long time a go I started a topic here about NOT noticing a score the first time one watched a movie. Upon a second viewing, I and other members who chimed in realized what great scores they’d not noticed with a first viewing. My most egregious lapse into film score deafness was for Legends Of The Fall and Dances With Wolves. I was so into these movies’ narratives, I only noticed those scores maybe on a subliminal level. Then I watched these movies again and really heard their glorious scores. Horner’s Legends and Barry’s Dances are two of my very favorite scores.

With Dances With Wolves, I was totally engrossed with the movie for three hours. I loved the movie. On second viewing I realized that Barry had composed a gorgeous, perfect score just chock-full of amazing themes and motifs. I still play it often.

I do have questions for you learned members. I believe it has been posted before that Costner wanted Basil Poledouris to score his movie, but Basil was scoring another movie at that time. Does anyone know why Costner hired Barry? Barry really wasn’t known for scoring a lot of westerns. I also read I think in a FSM magazine that Costner did hire Poledouris for Open Range but then replaced him with Kamen. Any truth to this?

"It's very important for a composer to have the room, to have the freedom, to explore these things. I tried to do that with Kevin Costner, on his last film, Open Range. I was set to do it. Then Disney called, and they needed a temp track for the movie. And you know what they temp-tracked it with? Starship Troopers! Honest to god! And I heard it and said 'This is not what we talked about. I can't do this'. And I got out of the movie. This is not a space opera! This is very classic western. Absolutely. Very intimate, in the mud, in the rain. Unfortunately, it was the end of Kevin and I relationshionship."

Yes, this quote is from a great Basil interview from Ubeda you can read here:

The open Range part is on page 4

It is true that Poledouris was approached first but he was busy with something else. I don't think Costner was especially precious with who scored the movie. It was probably a case of going through who was available. I know he was delighted with Barry's score.

It started to look like a Costner-Wilson-Barry relationship was forming, because of apart from Barry then being on The Bodyguard, the three were teaming up to create Travels With Charley.

However, Barry's involvement on The Bodyguard fell though, Travels With Charley fell through, and what looked like a promising relationship didn't go any further.

Cheers

It is true that Poledouris was approached first

reason - his "Lonesome Dove" score

but he was busy with something else.

gig with his friend John Milius on the "Flight of the Intruder" movie

Thank you Ed and Stephen for your information. I can certainly see why Starship Troopers would not fit the Open Range Trailer. Lonesome Dove's themes would have better captured the brotherhood of Open Range. It does seem odd to me that a disagreement over trailer music would end the relationship. One the other hand, we did get Kamen's fine score.

That's one of several films that were predicted to be disasters in the months leading up to their release. The Godfather and Titanic were others. All wound up winning the Best Picture Oscar and cleaned up at the box office.

Yes... I remember in Hollywood, before DANCES WITH WOLVES was released and went on to become the enormous success, some called it disparagingly "Kevin's Gate".
