Yep, if it says Georges Delerue on the packaging, it's worth getting.

Am I given to understand that all of his scores are of such equality that it is impossible to have favorites?

Favourites were not asked for.

I have only a few. I favor highly SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES because not only does it have his usual sound, it also has the sort of stuff I've never heard him write before.

The fact that both The London Sessions (a great intro/sampler of many of his scores) and Show of Force (short but excellent) are still both available from Varese, and still on sale, kind of blows my circuitry.

$20 for both (plus shipping) is a steal.

Anyone interested in Delerue that doesn't already own them should jump on these asap.
And grab Something Wicked wherever you can too.
And The Pick-up Artist/Rapture from Kritzerland
And Mother's House from FSM
and...

yeah, you really can't go wrong with anything by him- but some stuff is still around at retail pricing while it's technically OoP. I'd probably prioritize those along with anything that's on sale like ^

Joe vs The Volcano is wonderful. I don't have a lot of Delerue, but what I have I really like.

The London Sessions is the perfect introduction to his music. Some of his finest work is represented in those discs, which exhibit every side of the composer's style.

London Sessions are definitely a good sampler.

There are so many great Delerue scores but a couple of my personal favorites are:

"La Révolution française" - epic in every sense of the word and a project Delerue was born for.

"Rich and Famous" - much more intimate but IMHO has one of the most rapturously beautiful themes Delerue ever wrote...and that's saying a lot.

But it's hard to go wrong with anything by Delerue.

Have to agree with The London Sessions.
The original 3 CDs were my introduction, and I fell in love with his music, and Have been picking up his scores ever since.
There have been many releases from Intrada, Music Box, Varese, Kritzerland and all are worth tracking down.

I was in heaven when Intrada finally released Something Wicked. There is just something magical, childlike, melancholic, and romantic about that score. So many of his scores will just break your heart with how beautiful they are.

Start with London Sessions and explore from there.Enjoy.

The Day of the Dolphin - beautiful score. Also any of the Varese LONDON SESSIONS.

I recently picked up Sin of Innocence/Love Thy Neighbor. A pair of marvelous, light-hearted scores. Pity that no one is talking about them.

I'm looking to set some time aside for listening to the Delerue that I have, which I haven't heard in years. I remember really liking The Horseman, Day of the Dolphin, A Walk With Love and Death, and some others. I do have maybe a dozen or so between lp and cd and recently downloaded the 6-cd set from Uni France, so I'm looking forward to re-discovering what I have and checking out some newer things. In general, and my recollection is that my impressions were more favorable to the European films.

In what format are you looking to get the scores. If CD, then getting recommendations for Women in Love, Queenie etc is just pointless as they are hard and very expensive to get hold of. And in fact its probably easier in some way to know what CDs (if its CDs you are after)to avoid than ones to get as with Delerue there are very few 'duds' - Dien Bien Phu for me is one I am not so keen on, but you may be !. I second the praise for the Sin of Innocence CD, and would also say that someone is selling Le Mythomane / L'Education Sentimental on ebay for just £10 at the moment - a criminally low price ! I also note that several of your favourite scores are choral scores - so maybe you should look at scores by Delerue like Agnes of God.

Yes, getting a compilation is always a great start if you're new to Delerue. The London Sessions have been mentioned (that's the same 2CD set that is called GREAT COMPOSERS, right?); I also heartily recommend the 6CD box LE CINEMA DE GEORGES DELERUE from Universal for a lot of the early stuff, the New Wave/Truffauts etc. - but also for a great overview. But I got the impression that the topic starter was indeed familiar with Delerue's output, so here are some of my personal favourites that are (mostly) not on the 6CD set:

L'INCORRIGIBLE/VA VOIR MAMAN, PAPA TRAVAILLE
L'AFRICAIN
LE BON PLAISIR
LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR
AGNES OF GOD
CRIMES OF THE HEART
SIN OF INNOCENCE
A SUMMER STORY
LA REVOLUTION FRANCAISE
A SHOW OF FORCE
BLACK ROBE
REGARDING HENRY (rejected)
STEEL MAGNOLIAS

As others have said, it's hard to go wrong with Delerue, but I've personally always had an issue with his dissonant affairs. He's best enjoyed in his trademark lyrical/bittersweet mode.

Of course, there will come a time in any recommendation thread where basically all his titles are mentioned, so you're none the wiser! smile

have only heard a few scores of delerue, hence these might not be his best but i think they are worthy of a try:

Diên Biên Phu
Descente aux enfers
Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne
Thibaud The Crusader
Les chevaux du soleil

i would also recommend these 4 non-soundtrack albums, which include covers of some of his film/tv works.
