In regards to "Fill" Metal Jacket, I didn't find any drawbacks to the film being shot in England. For someone who has never been to Vietnam, and only has Vietnam war films for a reference to how the country looked, I used to believe that the film had been shot in Asia. Even when I found out that the film was done in England, I still thought it looked like the film was in Vietnam.
Heck, the Vietnam segments for Forrest Gump were filmed in South Carolina, and up until I found that out, I thought they actually went to a country in Asia to film those scenes.
