Well, i've watched this film today, first time since 1980, and first of all, i don't understand the hatred for this film. Ofcourse its not perfect, and moves a bit slow, but it is still engaging enough. But it is really Barry's score that's the standout, what a great score it is. And thanks to Silva for the re-recording, which is really faithful enough to the original!

One of my favorite books by Cussler. Barry’s music takes the film to new heights. Incredible score. Also the film boasts amazing miniature effects as well. Good stuff! I agree with all of this. It's a great book. It's not a great film, but it has good things in it. The score is dazzling, with superb melodies, and the City of Prague album nails it for us. It was such a great thing when that CD came out.

I was just talking about this the other day with my kids. One of them was reading a factoids book and asked if I knew who Robert Ballard was. I said yes, and before he found the Titanic the assumption was that it sank basically in one piece. So there was this book and a movie about raising it up which went out the window once they discovered the ship was in two pieces. Wasn't that kind of cool? My kids are 10 and 7 and could not have given less of a shit. Hahaha love it.

I also watched this film for the first time ever tonight. I realize it was a commercial flop, but I don't understand all the criticism. It's a pretty good movie, as far as I'm concerned. Great model and miniature work. Nice prolonged, underwater suspense scenes. A little bit of Cold War international intrigue. And then the whole fascination of the Titanic itself. I know the score is a big favourite for many. It isn't quite my cuppa tea, but no matter. I found the film much, much better than its reputation. Agreed - I've seen it a handful of times since its release (I was one of the five people who saw it in the theater!), including a few weeks ago. It's quite well done, with a good story, a nice twist at the end, and an excellent cast fleshing out necessarily shallow character 'types.' Lots of production value on hand, including those amazing miniatures and Barry's elegiac and very effective score.

I love the Nic Raine CD, but I've found that DVD sound clips of the Barry version sound a bit muddy. Has that been everyone's experience, or do I need better sound clips?

I've read the novel back in the day, the story of the Titanic fascinated me ever since I first heard it as a kid. Still need to watch the movie. John Barry's music soars though, the most glorious Titanic music ever.

I love the Nic Raine CD, but I've found that DVD sound clips of the Barry version sound a bit muddy. Has that been everyone's experience, or do I need better sound clips? As you probably know, useable master recordings of John Barry's score have eluded soundtrack labels for years. They're probably buried under a motorway. Network Releasing managed to construct a partial isolated score out of scraps, which do sound muddy, but are clear enough to reveal that the Nic Raine re-recording lacks details that can only be heard in the isolated score track. The Nic Raine re-recording was a by ear transcription, which means it had no hope of picking up those details over the explosions and sound effects, and is limited to being only the music actually heard in the film. Anecdotally, Barry wrote and recorded more music than is heard in the final film. I say again, anecdotally, which could also be read as possibly apocryphal. One of the short promotional films does, however, seem to affirm this. I really like Nic's recording, and it's the best thing we have, but I can hear some transcription errors, some missing detail only revealed by the isolated score track, and it lacks the bass presence of the film recording. For these reasons, I must admit that if I was rich enough to lose money hand over fist on a philanthropic project, I'd love to sponsor a new recording using the original orchestrated scores. Cheers

This is a Barry at his murky best. I also like the way he holds back on the triumphant "raising" theme until the damn boat is actually raised, creating a startling contrast with the ominous nature of the ominous underwater score. Plus, that jaunty Corwall ditty is nice.

Oh, the movie is just terrible. And Dirk Pitt has to be the worst character name ever, unless it were in a porn film.

Thor, I saw it in the theater when it first came out and haven't seen it since. I remember my reaction but not the specifics.
