Writer Gary Gerani posted on The Night Gallery page on Facebook that composer Billy Goldenberg has died at the age of 84 in New York City. He was certainly the King of Television Movies and Shows.

So sorry to hear this! Goldenberg's tv scores always seemed to me to parallel (in effect if not style) for the small screen the sorts of things Michael Small was doing for the big screen paranoid thrillers of the 70s. I hope that one of the "usual suspects" (LLL perhaps) will see fit to memorialize him with a multl-disc set showcasing his work for Columbo and other series as well as some of the tv movies he scored. We have only Duel and a few tracks on FSM's TV Omnibus on CD but little else from Billy Goldenberg to enjoy as of now. RIP Mr. Goldenberg

Much underrated composer.
Early mid 70s if you saw his name on a tv score you knew it would be watchable if for only the music.
Lizzie Borden was a masterpiece

Sad to hear this. I remember him particularly from is early Spielberg collaborations and Columbo. Unsurprisingly, I am especially fond of DUEL, which is also one of my favorite Spielberg films.

Lizzie Borden is a great score.

He also had one Broadway musical, for anyone else interested in musicals--Ballroom with lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman and a book Jerome Kass based on his own great TV movie, Queen of the Stardust Ballroom which was a non musical with a score by Goldenberg as well. The cast album is pretty terrific. It flopped on Broadway, partly due to extreme expectations because it was the first musical from director/choreographer right after he created A Chorus Line, but is worth a listen.

RIP.

A great loss. He never really got the credit he deserved to 1970s Universal TV.

Saddened to read this news. He was a big part of my childhood/youth, and for many of us he kind of defined THE '70s TV sound for mystery, murder and the supernatural. Just thinking about his TV output from the late '60s into the '70s... he probably dominated my "straight from the TV" cassette tapes more than any other composer. Just off the top of my head I recall that I had the Main Titles (plus some episode segments with the inevitable dialogue and sound effects) for FEAR NO EVIL, NIGHT GALLERY, DUEL, GHOST STORY, THE LAST OF SHEILA, DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK, COLUMBO, ONE OF MY WIVES IS MISSING...

I think that that particular Billy Goldenberg sound, with those unusual melodic leaps, key changes and inventive chord structures can be heard very noticeably in Columbo's RANSOM FOR A DEAD MAN, THE LAST OF SHEILA, the final sequence of ONE OF MY WIVES IS MISSING... and probably encapsulated in less than a minute in his theme for THE SIXTH SENSE.

I never had any of those LP releases (RED SKY AT MORNING - I think this was mentioned by Chris Malone in the latest Goldsmith Odyssey podcast - THE GRASSHOPPER etc), and his work isn't well represented on CD, but we can thank the labels for DUEL, BUSTING and two of his scores for AMAZING STORIES (THE AMAZING FALSWORTH and WHAT IF?). Oh yes, of course, and FSM's HIGH RISK on the TV Omnibus. Those are the Goldenbergs I have on CD. Am I missing anything?

I've always considered DUEL to be one of the best score CDs ever released. It gets a 10 outta 10 from me.

RIP Billy Goldenberg. He was great.

I always forget that he wrote the Main Theme to one of my favourite TV series as a kid, ALIAS SMITH & JONES*.
Me and me Dad would tune in religiously every week and the theme was exceptional.
I'd love LLL or Intrada to stick out a CD containing a highlights from the series collection.
That would be a Day-One purrrr-chase for me.

His creepy score for the Night Gallery pilot episode "The Cemetery" is unforgettable.

Condolences to his family.

This is such a huge loss, my thoughts go out to Billy's family and friends at this difficult time, Goldenberg produced much of the soundtrack to my youth, a wonderful composer, and i treasure my copy of the Night Gallery pilot recordings.

RIP.
