SET IT OFF - music by Christopher YOUNG

This is a seriously underrated score. The very badass main theme - Set it Off - is worth the price of the CD alone.

"Okay, Joan Wilder, write us out of this one."
Romancing The Stone (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) [La-La Land Records Expanded Re-Issue] - Alan Silvestri

"All right!, If we get out of this alive, I'm going to kill you. Let's go, come on!"
The Jewel Of The Nile (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) - Jack Nitzsche

Despite both movies being released almost two years apart Silvestri’s Romancing The Stone seems to have aged better between the two. Despite Nitzsche being also credited as the conductor of The Jewel Of The Nile the synthesizers seems to be more dominate than the orchestra, which is the opposite for Silvestri‘s score. Nitzsche must’ve limited to a small orchestra. “Pirate Fight” sounds like a synth mock up. Now I’m not slamming Nitzsche’s score because it does contain a nice love theme, a triumphant theme, a tenacious villain theme, and some fun Arabic music. Though the themes could’ve used more nuance because it becomes somewhat repetitive near the end of the album. Silvestri’s score on the other hand has a good balance between the contemporary and orchestral music. In certain cues Silvestri’s romantic theme for Jack and Joan conveys some nice 80s smooth jazz. I also enjoyed how Silvestri utilized Latin music during some of the moments in Mexico. It seems that Silvestri had more to work with compared to Nitzsche, who seems to have been limited with the desert locations and story. Regardless I still enjoy both scores.

Intriguing mixture of typically-fine dramatic scoring by Burwell and old-timey spirituals set to modern-day synth percussion beds.

Universal did some TERRIBLE movies in the 1990s... (also only 9:36 of Edelman).
