I just saw the movie and, boy, what a score!
Never paid attention to it even with the CD sitting in my shelf for years...

The movie is ok, but the score really tells everything the movie wants to tell.
Quite impressive!
And I am not big fan of Morricone's more dissonant tunes, but here they work perfectly and the main theme feels so tragic.

The expanded Quartet release is great, particulary the liner notes.

Anyone like it too?

Its a phenomenal score.
Wonderful main theme with concurrent lines and layers..a unique style Morricone was asked to repeat for Bugsy.

Yeah I’ve been a fan of the movie and score for ages. Even had one of those long box CDs for it. Wish I kept that.

And to think that Morricone didn't want to score the movie even with Director Phil Joanou pleading with him but thankfully, he saw the movie and liked it alot more than had anticipated and scored it.

Easily one of his best scores and a personal favorite of mine and it's a real shame the movie completely bombed when it came out 30 years ago but gained a major cult following on home video. It was definitely a best seller at the record store I worked in a long time ago. The Twilight Time Blu is a must own and it has an excellent commentary track by the director and the late Nick Redman and they talk about Morricone's music alot.

Very glad to see some love for this score...... Thought I was the only one. Love the score and the film. The Quartet double CD is brilliant, if you can find it!

You know how people describe Herrmann's Psycho as a "black-and-white" score? State of Grace to my ears comes closer to the color "gray" than any other film score.

How many Morricone treads do you need. Give the dead man a rest

Not as many enough...

Morricone never had so much interest here at fsm. Shame it took his death but this is his moment and its pleasing to see so many fsmers increasing their appreciation of his music. Long may it continue

Bill, I couldn't say it any better. The board is now exactly as I expected it to be from the start! The Maestro fully deserves it.

That genuinely baffles me. Morricone is the greatest film composer of all time. There is no one else that comes even close. That he hasn't 'had much interest' on a film discussion board is inconceivable.

Finally got round to giving this score another spin. Not sure I love it quite as much as some of his works in a similar vein (the Untouchables I guess?) but still a fine work. Out of interest, is it worth keeping the original album presentation or are the equivalent tracks on the expanded album essentially the same? In other words, "could recreate the original album as a playlist?" is effectively what I'm asking! I wonder the same about the Untouchables (although I could never bring myself to finish that score with the Machine Gun Lullaby, most unsatisfying album ending ever... almost!).

Disc 2 of the expanded edition is the album presentation - if that's what you're asking.

In the booklet they mention that the album version contains very different sound mix the way Morricone liked.
I didn't compare both versions, so cannot tell how different they are...

Ah right, sorry, I had put the case away and didn't have the booklet to hand. That explains it. I'll keep the original programme them, but either way, a great score that I enjoyed revisiting. Thank you!
