The more psychologically disturbing (than monstrously horrifying) 1941 version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde has Spencer Tracy in the title role. This was previously critiqued here:

As much as I admire & appreciate the earlier, more explicit version, I believe that this remake works better for all the reasons you suggest and that Tracey and Bergman create unforgettable, complex characterizations - more believable yet intense than March and Hopkins.
