What are most people doing nowadays but spending more time online right? I've noticed since the Covid 19 breakout sites that used to be open to the public are now requesting you sign up before you can view the content.

Enemy number one is Instagram. They used to occasionally block me for a day or so, but most of the time it was an open platform. Now its everyday and they want me to sign up in order to view posts, pictures and video. Luckily I found a round about way of viewing Instagram sites without being forced to sign up.

I go to Bluray.com "Deals" page everyday to see whats on sale as far as streaming titles and Blu Rays. Now they've made Best Buy and Amazon deals exclusive to "members". I totally forgot I signed up for an account ten years ago. Still a pain I have to sign in just to browse the deals.

Anyone else notice similar situations with other web sites?

Not noticed it, but not surprised. If there's money to be made, somebody's going to find the way, and everyone else will glom on.

Thanks for the confirmation. Would be interested to know if this is the case with other web sites.

Websites continue an aggressive campaign to block internet users from viewing their sites or content without allowing them to track you.

Space.com has completely blocked me. Here's the page I'm redirected to when I go to their site:

I don't know if it qualifies as a website, but I'm kinda annoyed by Zoom. They insist on having 40-minute time limits on their meetings, even when they're well aware that millions of people rely on their service in this difficult time. Thus forcing people to buy premium packages instead, for longer durations. I don't know if this 40-minute limit was something they had before the outbreak, but in both cases it's annoying - if it's something they launched AFTER the outbreak, it's morally despicable. If it's something they've had for a long time, but continued to maintain after the outbreak, it's unsolidaric.

But I guess that's capitalism for ya!

Hmmm... I don't really see anything extraordinary about it?
I mean, content publishing Websites basically have two ways of making money: charge you for viewing stuff or ads. How else are they going to remain open? Same with Zoom. That plattform costs a lot of money to maintain and develop, so they have to make money somehow. I mean, it's not ultra-capitalist thinking that these services and platforms cost a lot of money to maintain, so why should their services be free for everybody? They even let you use the thing for 40 minutes for free, and if that's still not enough, well, there's the option to pay for more. Used to be a time when an oversea phone call between Europe and the US cost 5 Dollars a minute! Just for one connection between and lousy sound quality.
Sure, many ads are annoying and I could do without them, paywalls are annoying too, and I'd love for a free for all and anybody Zoom, but how is that supposed to work?

In a time when most people are struggling with incomes just for the basics, I find it particularly provocative with a capitalist, vulture-like mindset. Maybe it's because I'm from a country that relies on a high degree of communal spirit. For example, various grocery chain stores in Norway have lowered their prices on basic goods during the pandemic. I wouldn't expect Zoom to allow free and unlimited time for their customers, but maybe up the time limit a little bit. And if it's true that they introduced this limit AFTER the corona outbreak, that is particularly cynical.

It's the principle rather than pragmatics of it that annoys me.

I can see your point. I don't know if Zoom changed their policy during Corona, we're using it since the pandemic started, but excessively since then. I'd say 90% or more of our business conferences are done via Zoom or Google Hangout. I know Google offered a lot of their business tools for free (for a year as far as I know), so nice move there.

Its not just the ads, if fact I bet the sites make very little revenue from ads. They collection your personal data, track you on the internet then sell it to whomever they want. Its the number one reason I use script and ad blocks.

I agree with ya. In America the top one percent have made billions BECAUSE of the pandemic while the rest are losing their jobs, small businesses, savings, health insurance, houses and very lives. This is another example of the few taking advantage of the many.
