Not noticed it, but not surprised. If there's money to be made, somebody's going to find the way, and everyone else will glom on.

Hmmm... I don't really see anything extraordinary about it?
I mean, content publishing Websites basically have two ways of making money: charge you for viewing stuff or ads. How else are they going to remain open? Same with Zoom. That plattform costs a lot of money to maintain and develop, so they have to make money somehow. I mean, it's not ultra-capitalist thinking that these services and platforms cost a lot of money to maintain, so why should their services be free for everybody? They even let you use the thing for 40 minutes for free, and if that's still not enough, well, there's the option to pay for more. Used to be a time when an oversea phone call between Europe and the US cost 5 Dollars a minute! Just for one connection between and lousy sound quality.
Sure, many ads are annoying and I could do without them, paywalls are annoying too, and I'd love for a free for all and anybody Zoom, but how is that supposed to work?

I can see your point. I don't know if Zoom changed their policy during Corona, we're using it since the pandemic started, but excessively since then. I'd say 90% or more of our business conferences are done via Zoom or Google Hangout. I know Google offered a lot of their business tools for free (for a year as far as I know), so nice move there.

Its not just the ads, if fact I bet the sites make very little revenue from ads. They collection your personal data, track you on the internet then sell it to whomever they want. Its the number one reason I use script and ad blocks.

In a time when most people are struggling with incomes just for the basics, I find it particularly provocative with a capitalist, vulture-like mindset. Maybe it's because I'm from a country that relies on a high degree of communal spirit. For example, various grocery chain stores in Norway have lowered their prices on basic goods during the pandemic. I wouldn't expect Zoom to allow free and unlimited time for their customers, but maybe up the time limit a little bit. And if it's true that they introduced this limit AFTER the corona outbreak, that is particularly cynical.
It's the principle rather than pragmatics of it that annoys me.
I agree with ya. In America the top one percent have made billions BECAUSE of the pandemic while the rest are losing their jobs, small businesses, savings, health insurance, houses and very lives. This is another example of the few taking advantage of the many.
