I don't think I've ever seen a performance of his I didn't like. Even in weaker movies, he was eminently watchable ... a wonderful actor.

A real class act, what a screen presence, & that voice! He could do the serious stuff, but he didn't mind camping it up as well (Ming the Merciless).

One of the greats. I've only just started to scratch the surface of his career, really.

So sad, even though he reached an impressive 90 years old. I basically thought he would live forever.

Von Sydow was THE major actor in the Nordic countries for many decades, and although he has an incredibly rich catalogue to choose from, both here at home and in Hollywood, for me his best performance will always be as the ageing father in Bille August's masterpiece PELLE EROBREREN (PELLE THE CONQUEROR) from 1987, one of my favourite Nordic films from the 80s.

Curiously I had the same feeling, at the same time he played a very beautiful Christ.

Max von Sydow never did get an honorary Oscar, did he?

It's only been in the last 10 years that I've watched von Sydow's work with Ingmar Bergman. However, I will forever remember his bitter monologue in Hannah and Her Sisters, which, along with that oft-quoted Peter Fonda monologue from The Limey, is among my all-time favorite movie quotes:

"You missed a very dull TV show on Auschwitz. More gruesome film clips, and more puzzled intellectuals declaring their mystification over the systematic murder of millions. The reason they can never answer the question "How could it possibly happen?" is that it's the wrong question. Given what people are, the question is "Why doesn't it happen more often?" Of course, it does, in subtler forms.

"You see the whole culture. Nazis, deodorant salesmen, wrestlers, beauty contests, the talk show. Can you imagine the level of a mind that watches wrestling? But the worst are the fundamentalist preachers. Third rate con men telling the poor suckers that watch them that they speak with Jesus, and to please send in money. Money, money, money! If Jesus came back and saw what's going on in his name, he'd never stop throwing up."

He made the Sylvester Stallone Judge Dredd at least passable.

Great actor. He elevated everything he was in. Always a delight to see on screen. His voice had tremendous power. RIP that man.

I second the fact about the voice. All my favourite actors have great voices. Made an amazing Ming the Merciless. Who'd have thought it after the great Charles Middleton?

I've liked him in pretty much everything I saw him in.
Although I was disappointed to just hear the BBC TV news include Star Wars in his resume!!
Amongst his impressive body of work, I'd forgotten he was in the first 20 seconds of The Force Awakens!!
What about Escape To Victory wink

Merrrrriinnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!
