Columbia Pictures' composer George Duning died on this very day 20 years ago. I tried to find the original thread from way back then, but the search engine wouldn't allow (maybe there even wasn't one). His name may not be as well remembered as that of his contemporaries like Rozsa, Herrmann, Steiner, Newman or Waxman, yet Duning left us an amazing body of work.

Duning was great and unfortunately much underrepresented when it comes to releasing his scores. His Big Valley is due another outing on CD I feel. Either the old LP version or a box set collection like LLL did for Wild Wild West.

I'll always be grateful for his Star Trek scores. His episodes had so much affection, and he really gave the series that particular vibe overall that takes you to that place even if you're only a casual Trek fan and don't know his name or his episodes. What a great testament to his talent.

You all know of my love for Duning, and we've issued several CDs of his music. He was not somewhat under appreciated, he is completely under appreciated. If it wasn't for his Star Trek scores, he would probably be completely unknown today. So many brilliant scores - including Devil at 4 O'clock, Toys in the Attic (one of my all-time favorite scores, Picnic, all his noirs for Columbia, his beautiful score to Full of Life, Bell, Book, and Candle - but all of it. I never met him and only years later did I come to realize that he wrote a lot of incidental music for The Partridge Family, including the most well known of all the ones I acted it.

It would be great to see a double header CD being released containing his wonderful western scores for The Man From Laramie (1955) and Two Rode Together (1961). I understand that previous DVD releases have had both scores added as isolated music tracks! I will keep wishing and hoping!

It would be great to see a double header CD being released containing his wonderful western scores for The Man From Laramie (1955) and Two Rode Together (1961). I understand that previous DVD releases have had both scores added as isolated music tracks! I will keep wishing and hoping! Unfortunately, the Twilight Time Blu-Ray editions of both westerns do not contain the isolated music track - which nowadays probably doesn´t exist anymore at Columbia at all -, but only the isolated music and effects track. I have heard the one for TWO RODE TOGETHER and there are not that many loud effects, although the sound quality of the music itself varies very much. Still, the fact that only the music and effects track is available will certainly prevent an official CD release of these two Duning western scores. I don´t think that any of our specialty US soundtrack labels is keen on and will invest a lot of money to just release the music and effects tracks of these two nice scores - also of course for fear that too few people will buy something like this on CD. Maybe with a Goldsmith score they would do it, but with Duning?
