(Usual preamble apology if this has already been posted but I couldn't find anything on Google except a mention in Scott Bettencourt's obit for Johannsson on the main page two years ago.)

Two years after Johannsson's tragic death, his LAST AND FIRST MEN multimedia presentation is now finished as a 70-minute film and just premiered at the Berlin Film Festival. The critical reception so far has been positive if not rhapsodic. Any chance anyone here got to see it? Thor?

Per Amazon US, the score will be available to stream on February 28 and released on CD on March 27 as part of a deluxe release of the film on Blu-ray.

Looking forward to listening to this on the 28th - thanks for the heads up. Saw someone on Twitter asking about this today.

Wow, I feel seriously out of touch. I had not heard anything about this.

It's hard to believe anyone would attempt a film of Olaf Stapledon's notoriously challenging SF book "Last and First Men". It's a difficult read that I got through a few years ago. I immediately googled what I could find about this and now it makes more sense. It's not a straightforward dramatic telling of the book...that would be incredibly difficult...but "inspired" by the book with a narration taken from parts of the book accompanied by images and music but no actors. Looks fascinating. Bonus: One of the performers of Jóhannsson's music is recent Oscar winner Hildur Guðnadóttir.
I think I will get the blu-ray as it costs not much more than a night out at the movies and you get a soundtrack CD too.

I noticed on Amazon there is a 7 CD set of Jóhann Jóhannsson's music called "Restrospective" which includes at least two soundtracks, "The Miner's Hymns" and "White Black Boy". Unfortunately it's pricey at $80+

I've been listening to this over the weekend, it's very sombre and dark. Typical of Johansson's style but with the perspective of his untimely passing, all the more poignant. I like it but it's.... I don't know, a mixture of depressing and distressing. It gets to the point I had to press the stop button and take a break from it.

Not so strange, since they worked together a lot over the years, on many of Jóhannsson's scores. They were almost like siblings, really.

Now, I must admit I have neither seen LAST AND FIRST MEN, and hadn't even heard about it untill now. Thanks for the heads-up, Mike. I'll check it out.

Well, I didn't say it was strange or unusual, just interesting. And I'm not surprised, Iceland's music community is well-known for being close. Even with a population of some 350,00 (most in Reykjavik), I heard an Icelander once comment that when someone asks the usually dumb question: "You're from Iceland? Do you know so-and-so?", he was often surprised that he did know them.
