So strange , i was only just listening to a compilation CD of his , he scored some classic TV , Dark shadows and the Night stalker movies and worked on all of Dan Curtis's output including Winds of war . RIP Bob
This is very sad to hear. Happy he lived such a long life. Personally, my favorite of his is the score to Dan Curtis' Dracula. The love theme is very good, and plays quite well (and at times, creepy) on a music box. RIP
Sad news indeed. While he was best known for his horror scores, his music for "The Winds of War," especially the theme, took me by total surprise. So beautiful!
As with John Karlen last month, another person associated with TV's Dark Shadows is gone. I was lucky to have met both at Dark Shadows Festivals held in Los Angeles over the years and greatful to have been able to talk with both of them.
Thanks for the music, Bob. Almost a 100 years old, not bad. Hope his quality of life was good for most of it (no dementia, etc).
The Blu-ray releases of NIGHT STALKER, NIGHT STRANGLER and TRILOGY OF TERROR had recent interviews with him where he looked and sounded in very good shape.
I shall never forget his work on "War and Remembrance," especially on Episode 11, which, IMO, was motion picture quality scoring. This is the episode that largely alternates between Aaron's and Natalie's journey to/eventual arrival at Auschwitz and Byron Henry's first South Pacific submarine mission (some of the music here reminding me of parts of the score for "The Caine Mutiny"). I remember calling Bob Cobert the day after the episode aired (I think he was living in Palm Springs then) and telling him that if I was on the Emmy nominations committee I'd have a hard time choosing, for the actual award, between this episode and Episode 4 of Lonesome Dove. A few months later, both scores were nominated (Basil winning for "Lonesome Dove") and heard from someone that he was absolutely delighted by the attention as it was his first (and only) Primetime Emmy nomination.
And I got to tell him much I loved his theme for the "$10,000 Pyramid!"
The Winds of War and War and Remembrance are two of the most powerful, epic scores I've ever heard in my life. I saw the shows as a kid and they changed the course of my life, in many ways.
I was just rewatching The Winds of War last week, by chance, and planned to rewatch W&R next week.
