I have always loved the UNCLE scores (the 3rd season less so; the good scores that year were for GIRL). I'm one of the few people who found and bought the Randazzo album when it came out. I still had it when the CD came out (so I could lose the surface noise).

The entire Mother Muffin score is a highlight of the series. If you can, listen to it on the FSM Volume 3 of the Man from UNCLE. I think it's better without Randazzo's added soprano, but you can't lose either way. Heck, even his additions of his own compositions kept the style and sound so well you'd think they were from the show.

(And yes, I know, Girl was generally pretty lame, if lightyears ahead of "The My Friend the Gorilla Affair". I couldn't even get through that one on the DVD release.)

Anyone who likes 60's spy scoring MUST sample the UNCLE scores. Season one had Goldsmith (with the incredible 5/4 conception of the theme, later spoiled by Schifrin's 4/4 arrangement), Mort Stevens, Walter Scharf and Schifrin. Later seasons had Gerald Fried, Robert Drasnin, Richard Shores and one -choke- misfire from Nelson Riddle (the Batman from UNCLE?). And then there was Girl with works from Dave Grusin, Richard Shores and Jack Marshall (yes, he was a good jazz composer, not just the MUNSTERS man).

Way back in '67, I did a high school piano recital with a friend, which included my own (5/4) arrangement of the theme and "Bye Bye Jill" by Stevens.

Too much reminiscing there. But I can't stop myself when talking about UNCLE. It was the thing that got me started on the whole film score madness.

Now, if I could only find my way to Del Floria's tailor shop. . .

It's interesting that the CD of the Randazzo album lists "Dave Grusin" as the artist!

I'll see if I can find UNCLE Vol. 3 streaming someplace.

I've never seen an episode of TGFU or TMFU, but I do have the four FSM Uncle releases. Imo the version of "Mother Muffin" in the video linked above compares favorably to the superb original--I looove the inclusion of the soprano singer!

In the original score, "Leave the Driving to Us" (3:16-3:19) is especially groovy.

I wouldn't say one version of this music is better than the other, and I'd hate to have to choose as both make for great, yet different, listening experiences.

Boris Karloff, between his appearance as "Mother Muffin" and his season two Wild, Wild West role in "The Night of the Golden Cobra" certainly made some crazy late-career project choices. I'll bet the Boomer kids ate it up, having already watched his old horror films before TGFU even aired.

Remember a few years ago when in a thread here FSM members complained about these extraordinary prices at SAE, and eventually somebody at SAE posted here they were sorry and brought the price down?

Well, I guess that was a one off!

(no, I'm not complaining; if they want to charge a ton of money, that's their prerogative, but at least they should be consistent of the old apology meant nothing)

I originally read that as $19.95, then read Justin's post and did a double take.

Wel, miracle of miracles.

It turns out that I have the files for Volume 3. I don't think I've ever played them.

I will burn them onto CDs and listen to Mother Muffin.

Hearing Grusin on TGFU and his other early music gives me the same sense of awe I get when I hear Goldsmith's early TV work.

Yep, it's my favorite track from the FSM vol. 3 and from the Randazzo album. Maybe one of my favorite Grusin's ever!

I got the series pretty cheap through Amazon Prime, and rewatched the episode for the first time in decades.

Oh my lord, it was dire. Comedy without humor, thriller without pace. Episode without budget.

Still I to this day love Karloff in drag - he does it with so little fuss.

How did it go? With the listening to the original tracks, I mean?

Probably won't happen until later this week, but I'll report back.

You'll be maximizing your time-traveling pleasure if you're waiting until the weekend to listen to these (and hopefully back to back).

While I wait patiently to crank up the FSM version of "Mother Muffin," let's all enjoy this AMAZING track by Dimitri of Paris, who samples the "Girl from UNCLE" theme.

Listening to the FSM version now. Does the bridge that Teddy uses on the LP version show up anyplace in the score, or did he write that?
