TRIVIA---Ray Harryhausen's EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS was based on a series of true incidents in which UFOs buzzed Washington, DC including the White House and the Capitol Building in July, 1952. The UFO sightings, called "The Big Flap", received national news coverage and began on July 19, 1952 when radar at Washington National Airport and Andrews Air Force Base detected numerous UFOs. Traveling at estimated speeds up to 7,000 miles per hour, they soon buzzed the White House and Capitol Building. Two US Air Force F-94 Starfire fighters were scrambled to investigate the UFOs, but when the Starfires approached, the UFOs mysteriously vanished. When the Starfires left due to low fuel, the UFOs suddenly reappeared. Washington National senior air-traffic controller Harry Barnes said it appeared, "the UFOs were monitoring radio traffic and behaving accordingly." After almost six hours of buzzing the city, the UFOs disappeared.
On July 26, the UFOS reappeared when radar at Washington National and Andrews again picked up UFOs. Four Starfires were scrambled. Lt. William Patterson flew one of the Starfires when the UFOs surrounded his jet. US Air Force Project Blue Book spokesman Albert Chop revealed that Patterson then requested instructions, "'I see them now and they're all around me. What should I do?'...And nobody answered, because we didn't know what to tell him." Like the first incident, the UFOs disappeared at sunrise.
At a Pentagon press conference, the largest since World War II, the Air Force attributed the UFO sightings to misidentified aerial phenomena (meteors, etc.) and temperature inversion.

It honestly looks like Disney has put its own past on trial, has found itself guilty, and is now dead-set on committing artistic suicide to atone for its crimes.

Thank God I managed to get most of the classics on DVD 20 years ago, before they went into "the vault" (a most telling figure of speech if there ever was one).

I hope the remake of Anaconda is as much fun as the original, it really is enjoyable, & the second one is not too bad either.

"Not as hard as it is now."

Dragon, do we know a source for that UFO/White House video? Not youtube (!), but who took what and why?

Curious. That would seem remarkable too that footage like that has been obscure/unknown. (At least, I've never seen it... not that I am the be-all-end-all of that which is seen...)

Um...who are Joe and Anthony Russo?

The Marvel guys.

The real stunner on that list is David Yates. I mean, he's obviously there because of the Harry Potter films, but he feels so out-of-place. If it hadn't been for those films, he would still be churning out British indie films like a Ken Loach or Stephen Frears or whatever.

If you take away the reason for the list -- the money gross -- the whole list is ... well, it's something (I'll say that). A list of one-great's and guys who did one/two/tree good things and that it's, and people it's embarrassing to see on the same list with somebody like Spielberg.

Great question Warlok, thanks! I am curious about that video too. I've seen "documentaries" proclaiming that video as corroborating evidence that the radar anomalies were real ufos over D.C., but I've only seen it recently. My reasons for cynicisms:
1. If it was truly from 1952 I believe we'd all have seen it over and over.
2. None of the reports/articles, etc. from 1952 that I've read have ever mentioned video, or as they would have
phrased it then, film.
I was halfway paying attention to some TV show recently and they stated that the video had been colorized and was originally b&w. It just increases my cynicism. I wish now that I had paid closer attention to what show it was and what "expert" was touting the video.
Once-informative TV channels, like History and Travel have just abandoned any pretense of objectivity about ufos and the "paranormal" nowadays. They present hearsay, video clips and quotes from people who have been exposed as outright liars, phonies and some mentally ill (not that folks with mental illness can't be reliable witnesses) as iron-clad proof of all kinds of alien activity here on earth - abductions, underground battles with aliens, etc. and don't even bother to offer skeptical comment.
That's why I have some serious doubts as to the validity of this vid. To my thinking, if this vid is legit, someone would have claimed it!

RE: Top Directors- Safe to say many of them wouldn't be on the list if they weren't attached to billion dollar franchises and got all the money they could ever dream of to make these films.

RE: Bambi- Another Lion King coming soon to a theater near you. frown If you appreciate art, more specifically animation as an art form you would understand why this is a pointless remake.

WARLOK:

I don't know the origin of the Youtube video, however I noticed it says, "July 12", but the actual incidents occurred on July 19 and 26, so take it with a grain of salt.

In this movie, I must assume they solve the mystery and then can tell the rest of us what happened to the flight?

I quite agree. Not even taking the mother's death into account, just the opening pan through the forest is enough to bring anyone to tears. Another thing I dread about this remake is that they're most likely going to play up anti-gun/anti-hunting aspect to an absurd degree as opposed to the more subtle look at that in the original.

Re. Disney.
If Robert Zemeckis is involved, he could just be the magical fairy dust they need to turn things around.

Re. the White House vid.
It could be just me, but that looks an awful lot like a squadron of choppers flying close formation.
