Forgive me if this has already been posted on here and I had missed it, but have just come across this article claiming that Star Wars, and in particular, the soundtrack, is racist and that Williams' music reflects long-standing prejudices in American society. The article also claims that Jeffrey Chen, who wrote the article says that Williams and people like him (presumably white males) have no place in Hollywood.

If I rolled my eyes any harder, they'd get stuck.

it is amazing that we allow people who do not know presume to show others the way.

This would be funny if it weren't so sad.

All of access media is about getting clicks (making money) by forging fake outrage. It should all be ignored and shrugged off nowadays. There aren't any honest "actors" anymore.

I completely agree.

The score simply contrasts musical flavors and conventions that long-predate Williams, like Richard Strauss' Don Juan versus Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade.

I was really, really dreading the the inevitable creep of Idiot Fad Wokeness into film music analysis. Fortunately, this piece is two weeks old and doesn't seem to have picked up much traction.

I do agree with the general point that it is of great importance that minority groups have more representation and creative input in the field of arts and entertainment. In addition to giving them a voice, it creates a better, less stagnant entertainment product. However, the bad-faith, Soviet-style critique of beloved works based solely on ideology will just piss people off.

This article is written by an idiot of epic proportions. There is nothing the author has to say that anybody needs to read/hear. Do not waste your life is dumbassery like this.

I agree with you. But should the approach be to ignore what has been written or to take action... whether it be legal for libel or write a detailed rebuttal? Could fans of Williams from FSM with musical expertise disprove what has been said using examples from other work etc and send that to the same rags that published Chen's article?

Yes, the approach to epic idiocy is to ignore and dismiss the idiocy. If a child tells you they are a pony and will grow up as one, it's idiocy and you don't engage it.

It is not the onus of sane people to disprove every bit of shit that some idiot craps out. That's not how a thoughtful society should ever work.

Jeez, now I understand why, after each time I listen to Williams' STAR WARS scores, I am filled with an almost uncontrollable desire to go out and beat up an Asian.

Absolutely ignore it. This idiocy does not deserve traction, it is too stupid to even merit a rebuttal. I'm pissed that I even know it exists lol.

There is nothing new contained in the article. It's just a tired regurgitation of the same old complaints from decades ago about old westerns having stirring orchestral cavalry music versus red indian drums and typical warpath music embellished with primitive whooping and hollering during war dances. Same arguments. Might as well now claim that Steiner was a racist. And Victor Young. And all the rest.

Still if people continuously spout this rubbish to the extent that that is all people hear and it is never challenged, there is a danger that it could be accepted by some people as being true

I can't believe such stupidity exists - and it even has a place in a major newspaper... If they continue like this I will be proud to announce that I'm a racist... C'mon, someone stop this wave of idiotism, please!

Chris Rock joked back in the 1990's -- when in my opinion he was still funny -- saying: "White Out: A tricky substance that only eliminates black letters!"

We're not that far off now from that thinking some people demonstrate...
