Has anyone compared The Great Train Robbery to the prior Intrada release and have an opinion on whether the sound quality on the Quartet version is worth the double dip? I'm not that interested in the edited cues, based on the description, so it will be whether there is a significant difference in sound quality.

I too am interested in anyone’s opinion on the improved sound quality. Quartet or Intrada?

Both labels are great, just asking for thoughts on the new album presentation.

I double dipped and this turned up recently. Sonically a little different on first impressions but nothing out of this world. At times I found the presentation to appear more detailed with the overall presentation being more upfront. Not 100%. The edits are minor so cues don’t come across that different. I was disappointed to find one of the bedroom Lute piece attached to the lovely Rotten Row. Personally not a fan of all the Lute cues and have deleted them from the playlist along with source cues. Was not aware the Clues cue was an alternate of Rotten Row though. Also the CD credits the NPO as the orchestra but the original album credited a supposed National Symphony Orchestra. Always wondered if that was a typo and it was always the NPO. Overall a fully fleshed out version of this magnificent score but you don’t gain a great deal from already having the Intrada. But the Quartet is a must if you don’t have this score.

THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY – 40TH ANNIVERSARY REMASTERED EDITION (2-CD SET)
Music Composed and Conducted by Jerry Goldsmith
Collection Produced by Neil S. Bulk
Mastered by Doug Schwartz
Liner notes by John Takis
Limited edition of 1000 units

Quartet Records and MGM proudly present a new re-mastered edition of Jerry Goldsmith’s beloved score for the 1978 Victorian adventure-comedy caper, THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY. Based on director Michael Crichton’s own novel, the film stars Sean Connery, Donald Sutherland and Lesley-Anne Down as charming and distinguished thieves who make elaborate plans to steal a shipment of gold from a moving train. Goldsmith's score, the composer’s third collaboration with Crichton (following PURSUIT and COMA) is one of the best of its period. It features a catchy, vibrant main theme, the locomotive for an exciting, elegant score, powerfully performed by the National Philharmonic Orchestra and recorded with great precision and detail by Eric Tomlinson at Anvil Studios in London.

The music for THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY was originally issued on LP in 1979 by United Artist Records in a short (29 minutes) but delightful album conceived by Goldsmith, masterfully edited but decidedly not in film order, that was nevertheless a very pleasant listening experience. In 2004, Varèse Sarabande released the first expanded edition, which added seven minutes and was re-mixed for SA-CD. Intrada reissued the score in 2011 as a double-CD set debuting the complete film score using Eric Tomlinson’s original mixes on CD 1 and the album program on CD 2. That edition sold out many years ago and commands high prices on the second-hand market.

Now, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the international release of the film (it premiered at the end of 1978 only in the UK) and the release of the original LP, Quartet Records presents an all-new edition with CD 1 showcasing for the first time the score as intended for the film, with all performance edits and combinations recreated from new, high-resolution (192 kHz/24-bit) transfers of surviving 1/4? tapes featuring Eric Tomlinson's original stereo mix. CD 2 contains the original 1/4? stereo album master newly transferred (at 192 kHz/24-bit) and remastered from the first-generation master tapes.

This collection has been meticulously produced by Neil S. Bulk and mastered by Doug Schwartz. The package includes a 20-page booklet with detailed liner notes and track-by-track analysis by John Takis. All aboard!

Yikes, that was as little warning as when the Intrada MAF edition sold out!

I hope everyone who wanted a copy got a copy of this wonderful score. But if not, it’s MGM. Unless the Amazon purchase changes things I’m sure some label will reissue this again. smile

Ugh. I just ordered it from Intrada the day before it sold out paired with an out of stock CD. So I'm probably out of luck. Oh well.

Unless GTR was also listed as Out Of Stock when you ordered it, you should be good.
It just won't ship until the other title is back in stock.

In my experience, Intrada has always had a good, real time inventory accounting.
