I was just wondering if any of you UK based score fans might have any top tips on where is the best place to buy releases from labels like Intrada or La La Land here in the UK?

Happy to buy direct from the US if the value is better, but maybe you have some other sources you use?

Thanks!

I have used BACKTRACK RYE for U S A and European releases in the last couple of months.
Excellent service

None. The overall costs have squeezed me out. I used to use Arksquare in Japan but now they get hit by UK Customs. The mark-ups on US stock from the European suppliers is too high, so I can't use them either. It also doesn't help that soundtracks I want are priced $29.99 or above. I wanted Intrada's Batteries Not Included but could never afford it, and now it's out of print. Two and three disc sets, and boxsets, are increasingly prolific.

I don't lose sleep over it. I still enjoy using this forum, regardless.

This is when you really long for the digital option...I'd buy SO much music if that was available, but I appreciate it's complicated to provide it.

I'm not in the UK but shipping-wise Chris's Soundtrack Corner is not bad either.

BACKTRACK, one of the few UK based dealers left , is good. I have used Elite Soundtracks based in Nottingham a few times but found their customer service very poor. Musicbox and Chris's soundtrack corner have both been mentioned earlier and I would second them.... Chris is particularly good and uses this forum. Buying direct from the US just isn't an option any longer..... I bought some CDs from Screen Archives Entertainment earlier this year on two occasions...... Their customer service was atrocious and I got hit by vat costs of almost £20 for 4 CDs that totally negated the reason for going direct to them in the first place. I would rather slit my wrists then ever use them again. Luckily in the last year I have been providing marketing advice to someone who visits the US a couple of times a year, and I bought about 15 CDs, had them sent to her friends house in New England and she 'smuggled' them back for me. This saved me loads of money. I have a similar arrangement with Italian friends

Can you tell me if this is legal or not...I'm assuming it's NOT.

Can a person joint own a CD?

For example, imagine Steve in the US wants a physical copy of a soundtrack CD, while Bill in the UK wants a digital version of that soundtrack CD. Can Steve and Bill split the cost of the CD and have 'joint' ownership...with Steve keeping the physical copy only and Bill keeping the digital copy only?

I'm guessing this isn't allowed, and fair enough if so...but was wondering.

A digital option would be worse in many though, because a US digital release would likely be blocked from any buyer with a non-US IP address. I've wanted many things from overseas Amazon digital and iTunes and been blocked form buying them all.

At least with CDs they can't stop you from having them mailed to a foreign country, digital files are supremely easy to lock to one country due to rights.

It costs $97.23 to purchase the John Williams Disaster Movie Soundtracks set, inc. postage to the UK. Does anybody know how much customs & handling charges might be incurred for this?

Music Box Records charges €92.95, and no customs charges.

Trying to work out the cheaper option. If there’s nothing in it I’d prefer go support LLL and order direct.

Edit: Just tried this site:

https://www.simplyduty.com/import-calculator/

Total cost looks like £89.70 inc. So not really much cheaper from buying from a European supplier.

I would think if cost is the primary motivator and you just want the music and don't care about physical CDs, here's an idea. Make friends (or a business arrangement) with someone in the US who is willing to legally buy downloads for you, burn the files onto a DVD and mail them to you. The content of a lot of CDs could be put on one DVD, so even with today's insanely high overseas shipping cost, postage would be low. Also, an obviously home-burned data DVD would not generate VAT costs.
I have no idea about the legality of that. I don't THINK it's illegal. You'd just be getting around corporate attempts to regulate their regional licensing issues. Just like millions of people have code-free DVD and Blu-Ray players now.
I'm not a copyright expert, but I don't think any of that regional coding and blocking of certain territories for downloads is enshrined in law anywhere. But I could be wrong.

It depends on what's important to you.

You will never get your CD faster than by ordering it direct from the producer. If you order from anyone else, they will be receiving their stock about the same time as direct customers in the same country will actually be receiving the CD. Ordering from Europe will add about a week.

If you're prepared to wait a bit longer and be absolutely sure of not being caught for import duties, go with someone like Music Box.

However, don't expect people like Music Box to sell you the CD at the same price as the producer, because they will have to add their own postal costs and import duties to the cost of the CD.

I seem to recall comparing the cost of ordering a CD from La-La-Land and ordering it from Music Box and found the total cost about the same in the end.

Cheers

I have a question regarding Chris' Soundtrack Corner shop on ebay.co.uk

I can see that they ship to UK, but whenever I try and add anything to a basket I get the below message.

"An item you selected wasn't added to your basket because the seller won't sell to buyers that don't meet their requirements."

I then tried to Contact them through ebay but you can't - all you get is
"Unfortunately, this seller isn't able to respond to your question. We suggest reviewing the item again to see if your answer is in the seller's listing."

You should try to contact Chris directly through his website (soundtrackcorner.de), he has always replied to me soon.

Music Box Records is pretty good.

Brexit made Music Box an iffy prospect for UK customers. You have to buy an unseemingly amount from Music Box before MBR will ship to the UK.

This is still true. It's been a long time since I've been hit with a customs charge.
