DAA - pum, pum, pummmm . . . the serial cliffhanger bad guy card. How hard can it be?

My favorite "short big toon" is the three-note timpani for the 7 feet tall android Ruk in the Star Trek episode What Are Little Girls Made Of?

The Planets, why reinvent the wheel?

The Planets is sort of an obvious choice for comparison. The SW DS "sound" is monumentally successfull in portraying the Pluto-like wandering ball of menace as it trounces across the screen. It's in the movie several times but my favorite full on instance of its use is when the Falcon has made its gut wrenching escape from Mos Eisley and there's a wipe/screen dissolve to the DS and the LSO brass is at full blast, the cue ending with a slowly petering out organ-like winding down as the music fades. Brilliant juxtapositon.

Was David Arnold following in the same footsteps with his slightly more elongated bad guy theme when he went, "pum, pum, pum - pom, pom, pom?" The DS sound has a longer hold on the first note, while the following three are in quick succession. The ID4 variation breaks its similar motific variant with a quick three note entry instead of the equivalent DS sustain, but then has the three trailing notes. If that is not homage, I don't know what is.

I'm trying to think of other memorable snap orchestral announcements for the bad guy. I also remember the sound for Sirus the Virus in Con-Air. Now that was about as OTT as it gets, but I don't know - retrospectively its kind fo fun. But wait a sec, wasn't that similar to the "twang" for the Lee Marvin steel nosed villain from Cat Ballou?
