We kind of think this thing only happens to John Williams and Bernard Herrmann, but that year (1957) Hugo was Oscar-nominated for TWO scores: AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER. BOY ON A DOLPHIN.
And the winner was....Malcolm Arnold for THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI (not my pick).
The other two losers were: RAINTREE COUNTY (John Green) PERRI (Paul J. Smith)........yes, PERRI!!!
Hey Ron, I know when you click on David's video, it says "video unavailable." However, right below those words, it says, "Watch this video on youtube." I clicked on those words, and the video David is referring to plays.
I love the score. The main theme is gorgeous. I especially like the scene I'm posting below. When Cary Grant opens her bedroom door and sees his painting, the music is glorious. I cry every time I watch that scene and hear the music.
Damn it, Joan! Now you’ve had me watch that wonderful scene yet again and tear up all over again. Those strings, that melody, the acting, the direction, and that female choir doom me to tears of happiness every time.
I do love the music in this film. So gorgeous. Howard, glad you watched the film.
Below is a youtube you might enjoy. I wish it was longer. It is from Sleepless In Seattle when Meg Ryan knows she has to go to the Empire Building. Marc Shaiman wrote the score and then combined his score with Friedhofer's score. Theme starts at 24 seconds and lasts about 30 seconds. It is longer in the movie and is played again when Hanks meets Ryan at the top of the building. Enjoy.
Gotta tell you, the first half of the flick had me thinking this may have been Cary G's best piece of acting in his whole career. He and Deborah K had tremendous chemistry on-screen. And OMG Cathleen Nesbitt. What a presence.
