I remember as a girl thinking, "Thank God I'm not a man." They have to grow up and support everyone and be top banana, but by definition there can only be one top banana. On the other hand there can be any number of kind and gentle second bananas, or third bananas - a whole bunch of bananas - which is what I wanted men ... to be proud of. Or at least be not unproud of because they aren't heads of companies. Only rarely would I run into a man, a copyist or arranger, say, who was completely content with his moderate success. Short of the geniuses who actually manage to shine, they are always the best guys to be around. Dorothy Rodgers (songwriter, ONCE UPON A MATTRESS)

This one underpins my entire career: “The best ability is availability” Once you get a reputation for always picking up the phone and always acknowledging an email straightaway, people invest their trust in you - and you can get away with all sorts of stuff. the quintessential TG quip!

"... Bestial cries are heard: neighing horses, the squeal of a brass pig, crying jackasses, amorous quacks of a monstrous toad... This excruciating medley of brutal sounds is subordinated to a barely perceptible rhythm. Listening to this screaming music for a minute or two, one conjures up an orchestra of madmen, sexual maniacs, led by a man-stallion beating time with an enormous phallos." Maxim Gorky, on listening to an American dance band

"This, to me, is the ultimately heroic trait of ordinary people: they say no to the tyrant and they calmly take the consequences of this resistance." ~Philip K. Dick Thumbs up. I'm going to save this quote.

"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book has been rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street and building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And that process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right." ~George Orwell, "1984" Spooky-real.
