I finished this book recently and was greatly impressed with it, particularly the protagonist, Harry Morgan. Hemingway wrote a tough, (very) violent and hard-hitting novel about a man who struggles to sustain his wife and daughters and has to reduce himself to smuggling illegal cargo between The Florida Keys and Cuba. I loved how he describes the waters, the breezes, the sand. And the corruption of The Cubans as well as Americans. I am aware there is a 'classic' film involving a great Director and starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. I've never seen it, and probably never will. Now, after reading the novel, I cannot see Bogart in the film and there certainly is NO woman in the novel who would be played by Bacall. I remember reading (somewhere), that the film incorporates only the TITLE of the novel, and nothing else. So be it.
