Great songwriter. Great performer.

I was taken aback when I read how relatively older he was, too.
One just assumes that when some people hit it big, they were younger than they actually were.

Some of those deeper Cars cuts were stunning--"This Could Be Love" and "It's Not The Night", in particular.
They made great "happy" tunes, but I love it when they got a little darker.

He was 10 years older than his contemporaries in the New Wave scene!
Maybe that's why he concealed his face in dark glasses and long hair?
CARS forever!

I was in Boston when " Just What I Needed" was released ( bought a red vinyl 45!)

I remember thinking " if this doesn't become a hit single, the record charts are rigged".

It was the first hit single out if that scene iirc.

BLONDIE came after them

If you play an instrument, the Cars tunes are huge fun to play.
Uncannily catchy.

Rip. Drive is superb. About as perfect 80s as Take my breath away and In the air tonight.

First Eddie Money and now Ric Ocasek. frown

My grandmother thought "Shake it Up" was the bee's knees; she even bought the single.

"Just What I Needed" is magnificent. The production, the performance...

Sad to see Ocasek and Money pass.

I don't own any of their albums, but I did like much of what they did.
I thought that they and some other bands (including The Knack) came along at a good time for changing musical tastes, much like The Beatles, but without so much fanfare, what with Disco beginning to fade, and Punk being something of a niche.
I enjoyed the "clean" sound they had, with just the basics as far as musical instruments go, simple but catchy melodies (without being overly formulaic), etc.
To me it's sad to see the state of pop music today compared with those times, but then I am old.

Hey, you kids! I told you, pull up your stupid pants and get off my lawn!

There are not too many things more heartbreaking than going into a bedroom and finding your mate (or in this case, ex-mate--though I would imagine there was still plenty of love there) in bed, already having passed away.
Extraordinarily hard to get through something like that--even taking into account someone's advance age.

Rip. Drive is superb. About as perfect 80s as Take my breath away and In the air tonight.

Benjamin Orr did the vocals on "Drive" and now he and Ric are reunited in death.
