Hey everyone. Currently looking for scores that you might deem relaxing. Lots of stress and emotional stuff going on these days and I'm hoping for recommendations for music that's soothing, maybe a bit introspective, without being downright sad. I've thought of a few examples like ISLANDS IN THE STREAM and STANLEY & IRIS. What scores help you guys feel calm?

I find Desplat's The Tree of Life very calming and meditative.

"Islands In The Stream" is a good one. Except for the shark attack, most of the music has a life of it's own outside of the film. Other Goldsmith suggestions like "Lonely are the Brave" and "Chinatown."
Certain episodes of shows like original Star Trek, Outer Limits and Lost in Space reassure me. Comfort food for the soul. Maybe there are some TV shows you feel that way about.

My fav film soundtrack to relax to is Jeff Alexander's "Day of the Evil Gun." Gentle western guitar strumming and flutes. Sort of a continuation of his famous Twilight Zone ballad in "Come Wander With Me." Some highlights.

When I'm pissed off at the world and would go to Defcon 1 if I had the chance, I listen to Fred Karlin's "Chosen Survivors," Gil Melle's "World War III" or "Battle of the Bulge" for catharsis. Unfortunately only the Bulge is released.

Much of Lalo Schifrin's "Earth II."

"Aglaja" by Preisner is my favourite lately. I think his "Valley of Shadows" was also pretty relaxing. Also "Age of Adaline" by Rob Simonsen, and "Carried Away" by Broughton are a few of my favourites to relax to.

"Aglaja" by Preisner is my favourite lately.

LOVE this score! Wonderfully contemplative.

This may be my favorite style of score, as I like to cue stuff like this up softly in the background as I read. Quartet especially seems to have a bunch that fall into this category for me.

Badelamenti - The Comfort Of Strangers
Gaigne - el olivio
Gaigne - Amaren Eskuak
Gaigne - El Faro De La Orcas
Coulais - Journal D'une Femme De Chambre
Yared - The Lover
Coulais - The Seasons
Morricone - Butterfly
Abril - El Hombre y la Tierra
Doyle - Great Expectations
Lai - Visit To A Chief's Son
Morely - Watership Down
Goldstein - Jane & Payne
Iglesias - Ma Ma
Kieboom - Wild
Perez Del Mar - Le Tortue Rogue
Sarde - l'Ours (The Bear)
Montes - Frágil Equilibrio
Ortolani - Valentnia
Kaper - Green Mansions
Barry - The Betsy
Barry - Robin And Marian
Williams - The Accidental Tourist
Hisaishi - Princess Mononoke*
Einhorn - Dead Of Winter*
Grusin - Heaven Can Wait
Piccioni - More Than A Miracle
Goldsmith - The Russia House
Mandel - The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With The Sea
Hamlisch - The Swimmer
Herrmann - Fahrenheit 451/Walking Distance
Zimmer - The Thin Red Line*
Lewis - The Madwoman Of Chaillot*
Desplat - The Painted Veil
Desplat - La Fille Du Puisatier
Legrande/Williams - The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing (Both are great. I like the unused Legrand score as much, if not more than the Williams but both are great and a nice respite from more traditional action orientated Westerns)
Barry/Shire - The White Buffalo*

Some of these, like Mononoke, will inevitably have a few action/fortissimo breaks, but the substantial amount of more chill passages in the score still make them well worth the rec. IMO.

Very nice list Mr. Mose Harper. However, I (slightly) beg to differ. Herrmann's Fahrenheit has many cues that have his characteristic "nervous energy" for lack of a better word. Thusly, I tend to program out the "Firemen" cues, along with a few others, when I wish to have a purely "relaxing! listen. smile

yeah, no doubt there are a bunch of antic cues in that list of scores. Some judicious cherry picking and playlist making would probably be in order.
The part of the Herrmann disc I was flashing on was more the TZ- Walking Distance cues. I had put it into a playlist with a bunch of other stuff I wanted to "break in". I was doing something else at the time and had all this playing in the background. In the middle of the Walking Distance tracks, I had to stop what I was doing and surrender to a reverie. It was indescribably beautiful.

There's a whole lot of Delerue that prompted a similar reaction and that I was remiss in leaving out as well.

Blade Runner, until the end titles kick in.

Children of a Lesser God.

That was the first score that came to my mind. So I'll add another instead, Kiki's Deliver Service.

Edit: Weird cant find the actual OST on YouTube. This is a rerecording and a little more robust than the actual score.

To Mr. Solium: another great work from P. Sarde, only slightly marred by the Tchaikovsky connection. Otherwise, a fine, fine listening experience.

A few soundtracks that have a calming effect on me:

Apollo - Atmospheres And Soundtracks (For All Mankind) by Brian Eno
Horizon Zero Dawn by Joris de Man and others (though it takes a little careful selection)
Stepmom by John Williams
Friday Night Lights by Explosions In The Sky
Hero by Tan Dun
Interstellar by Hans Zimmer
Battlestar Galactica by Bear McCreary (again requires a little careful selection)
Tron Legacy by Daft Punk
Blade Runner by Vangelis
Blade Runner 2049 by Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch
The Banquet (aka The Legend of the Black Scorpion) by Tan Dun
L’Apocalypse des Animaux by Vangelis

I guess it is different from person to person but for me personally I can`t say that "soothing" music by John Barry and/or Georges Delerue helps me relax as I think it may help many other people but not me.

Strangely enough the only score that helps me if I am angry, sad or just need to calm down is, believe it or not Brad Fiedel`s Terminator 2, yes that particular score helps me relax and it works each and every time for me. I am like a new and improved person after listening to that score with a better self belief and ready to tackle whatever happens next.

Several of the scores mentioned here have energetic tracks that break up the mood. The perfect 'relaxing' album, to me, is when you press 'play' and let it play out in full without interfering or making playlists.

This is the type of music I listen to the most these days; I occasionally listen to upbeat, action-driven scores still, but they are basically exceptions.

As for recommendations, I wouldn't know where to start or stop. There are so many. I would also need to know if you prefer acoustic ensembles or if, say, electronic music is up your alley as well.
