Well, I don't know who those people were who were asking for it, 'cause I certainly never saw them.

But that's no way to predict what will sell and what will not sell. I could go through the Kritzerland catalogue, for example (or any label's catalogue) and point out tile after tile of scores next to nobody was asking for, but the label did it anyway.

And yet a number of these titles, from various, labels, sell anyway. I could point out examples of titles you'd think would sell well, but don't (some with people who were asking for them over the years).

And my own two cents on that Scott score: for me it wasn't the cover, but rather the score. I'll leave it at that rather than get probably a little insulting.

Really? Great theme, fun score. But people lap up The Great Race - comedy score, everyone wanted it. As you say, no way to predict and therefore I do what pleases me.

Mancini seems to be almost uniquely immune to the comedy score curse.

Very interesting comments here regarding comedy scores vs. action scores. Yavar makes some good points. I too am not a big fan of comedy scores although I did buy THE GREAT RACE and do like all Mancini scores.

Thanks Bruce for all the wonderful CD's you have issued, hope you might consider another Victor Young CD if the right scores still exist. I'm looking forward to the Henry King at Fox when ready. smile

I mean, just look at this cover. It's the kind of image that sells albums, when people imagine the exciting music that would be contained within:

The cover certainly sold me back in the day. I'd never heard of "Patrick John Scott." And although the music isn't in the top tier of action scores, Scott weaves his lovely theme into the score sufficiently that I wasn't disappointed.

Yes, extremely odd to me, given some of the all-time great comedy scores of Mr. Previn, Mr. Duning, Mr. Shire, even Alfred Newman. Go know.

Comedy scores that include a march seem to sell well. Stripes, 1941, _______?

Put my theory to test and release "Silent Movie". wink

The lack of a Region 1/A disc release hasn't done this film any favors when it comes to the score's popularity. I wondered why Paramount or its various licensees over the years (Legend, Olive, et al) hadn't released the film in the U.S. I did some checking and found that the U.S. copyright to the film is not owned by Paramount, but by The Rank Organisation.

VCI seems to be the only video label that has put out Rank product in recent years, so perhaps that's the source to look towards. VCI has released such Rank adventure films as FLAME OVER INDIA (1959) and THE RIDDLE OF THE SANDS (1979).
