Here’s a Baltimore Symphony Orchestra video broadcasted last night where it discusses the planning behind the ‘film with live orchestra’ concert program of 'Star Wars-The Empire Strikes Back'.

After going to these ‘live-to-picture’ concerts, patrons would get either phone calls or emails from the non-for-profit orchestras that presented these concerts asking them for donations. They plead to the patron about how a fraction of their orchestra’s operational costs to keep a season running comes from ticket sales while the remaining percentage comes from donations and advertising.

One of the ways that these orchestras get their funds are by having invites to ‘open rehearsals’—events where patrons sit-in on a working rehearsal of a concert. Some open-rehearsal events are limited to the donors for the orchestra while others charge admission. I’ve never seen one for a live-to-picture concert.

Given RonBurbella and David Lichty’s report of their sitting-on on a rehearsal for the live-to-picture concert from RUDY—without the film’s dialogue and sound-effects…

…, perhaps the orchestras that present these concerts should consider having an open rehearsal for these concerts. It would be a win-win for both the film-music lovers and the orchestras.

We, film-music fans, gripe that although hearing these classic film-scores in a concert-hall atmosphere is like enjoying them for the first, the film’s audio track hinders that joy. While having a separate live-to-picture concert where the entire film score is performed without the film may not be possible, having an open rehearsal where this same music is played without the film’s sound may be an alternative solution. The orchestra will get their much-needed funds from the fans, and we would donate to come to these open rehearsals because hearing this music away from the film’s sound-effects would not be featured at the concert. It is a rarity, and the orchestras can use this to their advantage.

The San Francisco Symphony did a live to film concert of "On The Waterfront" to Leonard Bernstein's score two years ago.

A few weeks ago I attended the SFO performing "The Godfather" live to film. Fabulous.

Yes, Jens was particularly keyed into that rehearsal, and frankly, both were interesting. The first was out of sequence (I think to allow the horn section to lave after their cues), with no film sound and many surprising adjustments. Jens particularly enjoyed seeing the silent clips and hearing the music live, in the clear. The second included the choir, who got most of the adjusting focus, involved just underscored clips, not the whole film, this time shown in order and with sound (to balance the film with the music). Each had its fascinations.

I wonder, though, if this pretty good idea might take too much of the rehearsal out of the rehearsals? With even a small audience, the orchestra might already feel on stage, needing to have a proper rehearsal before the public ones. I don't know though, because I don't play for an orchestra!
