The reverse seems to be more often the case -- as in Elfman's use of the "Serenada Schizophrana" in several of his scores, including that IMAX film DEEP SEA or whatever it was called, as well as THE UNKNOWN KNOW. Or Williams' use of "Esplanade Overture" in MONSIGNOR. But that's a different topic.

There are way more examples going the other way...concert works that have been inserted into film.

Film came first?

Yes. He scored Revolution in 1985. The symphony was premiered in 1990.

Right.
I remember.now the Symphony was in response to friends who died from AIDS. 1984 would have been premature for such a composition.

Nyman did Carrington come before it became String Quartet 3?

Nope - String Quartet #3 in 1990, Carrington 1995.

I played the Argo recording of Nyman's quartets 1-3 to very death when it came out in 1990.

Another Nyman work derived from his film music is Where the Bee Dances (saxophone concerto) from Prospero's Books.

This piece has a provenance that goes back even further, to a choral piece called Out of the Ruins, which Nyman wrote as part of a memorial for victims of an Armenian earthquake. It evolved from there to the string quartet, and from *there* to the Carrington score. Nyman is often quite understandably proud of his ability to adapt and reuse his own material.

Also, the Glass music that was used in The Truman Show goes back further still, to various sources, including his breakout album Glassworks, and his score for Anima Mundi. The fact he appears in Truman Show performing the music is a good sign he approved of how it was used. I did *not* know he went on to adapt the music for concert hall, but he is also one who very often uses existing material in new works.
