Was watching the old Warner Bros. cartoon, "This Is A Life?" earlier today, and it struck me just how similar the Bugs / Daffy dynamic is to what the relationship between Williams and Goldsmith must have been like over the years (if you cranked it up to 11 and exaggerated all the personality traits). The cartoon has it all:
Daffy being passed over for Bugs at an awards ceremony
Bugs going on and on with over the top modesty
Seething resentment on Daffy's part
The host / public fawning all over Bugs while Daffy gets ignored
Of course, my understanding is that Williams and Goldsmith were at least friendly if not good friends. But it still strikes as a true-in-spirit (if exaggerated) summation of their personality traits and rivalry. Be curious if anyone else has the same take.
Google the cartoon and watch it with the above in mind, and see if you don't agree. At the very least, you will only be out 6 or 7 minutes watching one of the all time great Warner Bros cartoons
I'd watch the cartoon (again, after these many years) if I wasn't behind a firewall at work. And I think Williams and Goldsmith are a pretty big deal, especially when taken together. They were still young men, but already considered brilliant, when I discovered film music.

The King had seething resentment over The Towner?
What about that time when he went Planet of the Apeshit over Ridley Scott using Tangerine Dream?
"... AND I'VE NEVER BEEN SO HUMILIATED IN ALL MY LIFE!" -- Jerry Goldsmith
I love both Williams and Goldsmith, so not meant to be disrespectful at all. I just gotta think there were times Goldsmith was sitting in the audience at the Oscars thinking:

But Williams wasn't even nominated that year (agreed that Delerue's win over Goldsmith was a head scratcher, though).

But if JerrBear really wanted to score E.T., then Daffy's reaction would be appropriate.

Right, so 1975 and 1983, then.
Just taking note of the rumor that ST-TMP was the one time where Jerry was particularly perturbed that he didn't win (even if Williams was not nominated).
