How did this win Best Picture over SAVING PRIVATE RYAN? I think SIL is one of the worst Best Picture winners ever.

By receiving the most votes in the category "Best Picture" I suppose.

It seemed to me that The Academy believed Popcorn Salesman would win for Saving Private Ryan. After all, they even had Harrison Ford announcing Best Picture! Whoops!

BTW, Shakespeare in Love director John Madden directed one of the best episodes of the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes series, "The Priory School." He also provides an excellent commentary track on the episode.

Shakespeare in Love, despite having Ben Affleck in it, deserved to win.

Scratch that. Thin Red Line should have won.

Scratch that--Life is Beautiful should have won.

What an awful year for movies!

Yes, a nutty win for best film, the other one for me was The Artist, and if you are like most people your thought is; what is that? My understanding is that Harvey Weinstein was a skilled political wheeler dealer at campaigning and recruiting votes for his films, and in this case it clearly worked.

These days Mr Weinstein has bigger problems.

I've not seen Shakespeare in Love yet, but I actually liked The Artist (the Vertigo quotation didn't bother me) and have no qualms with it winning Best Picture. However, I will say the rest of your post is pretty spot on

Maybe the Academy hated the Private Ryan bookends so much, they passed on it (I like lots about SPR, but it's ruined by some individual scenes that are quite terrible, plus those horrible bookends).
Thin Red Line was a nice nature documentary, but pretty dull and dreary overall...and LOOOOONG!!
I never quite got through the whole of Elizabeth or Life Is Beautiful.
I do like Shakespeare In Love though. It's a fine period drama/comedy, with Gwyneth at her most...radiant smile I really love the Warbeck score too.

Her Best Actress win really did seem like a coronation of sorts, and Paltrow was "all set" to be "the next" Audrey Hepburn, such was that radiance.

Why did CRASH win?
Why did 12 YEARS A SLAVE win?
Why did SPOTLIGHT win?
Etc, Etc. Etc.
Because it all comes down to ACADEMY POLITICS.

One story says that Gwyneth Paltrow saw the script on her friend Winona Ryder's office table in 1997, and asked her if she could read it. Without telling Ryder she was going to try for it, Paltrow went after and got the part. That ended the friendship.

That’s tragic. We could ‘ave seen ‘im kissin’ Winona’s bubbies!

I'd say the best nominated movie of that year was THE THIN RED LINE, but I like all the others. SAVING PRIVATE RYAN (which I incidentally watched just a few weeks ago for the second time and can confirm is just one really, really good movie) is more gripping and profound than SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, sure, but the latter is nevertheless a well done and charming comedy with excellent timing and just all in good fun. I sure laughed a lot more watching SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE than I did watching SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. ;-) What is "better" may just depend on the type of movie you are in the mood for. It's silly to compare one to the other and say it is "better" anyway, but that's the way show biz goes. All these movies were good.

I would heartily agree that this is the most likely reason.

I do like the movie, though.
Anything with Geoffrey Rush.

I'm with you, henry. Saving Private Ryan definitely should have taken it that year.

Spotlight was one of those rarities: a film that was both worthy and good. See also The China Syndrome.

Hi Tall Guy! I'm not saying SPOTLIGHT isn't good, but it's no classic like FURY ROAD. Nobody is talking about SPOTLIGHT anymore, but FURY ROAD has endured.

Hi Henry

I enjoyed both films but I think Spotlight was riding a wave of current events that gave it a fortuitous advantage.

By the by: do you prefer Fury Road in colour or monochrome?

Hi buddy! I would have gotten back to you sooner, but I had to look up fortuitous.winkBoth versions of FURY ROAD have their advantages and disadvantages and I love both, but I think I prefer the color version more. What about you?

I think the colour one edges it for me too. On the other hand, I marginally prefer the Logan Noir version. But this is probably a discussion for a different thread!
