The future of the Oscars and the Best Picture, is not at all good. We heard the rumbles last year of a 'most popular film" award, which they said they were doing, and then cancelled. And I think they cancelled it because they cast of the seriously overpraised Black Panther were tackily campaigning for an award for Best Picture, and indicated that they would "not accept" a "Most Popular" award. I can see that the creeping in of social politics and deference to mass audience tastes will eventually make the award pretty meaningless, something like a tad more foo foo People's Choice Awards. Sadly, for a decent portion of the mass audience, Black Panther or that type of genre picture is, to them, the "best film they have ever seen".
