TUESDAY, JULY 9

GAME OF THRONES---George RR Martin gave some bits of information about the upcoming HBO prequel series. He said Westeros will consist of 100 "petty kingdoms", not seven as in GAME OF THRONES.
He said the prequel series will include the Starks, direwolves and "things like...mammoths", but the Lannisters will not be included initially.
Martin added that there will not be any lead characters, but the prequel will focus on "a large ensemble cast".

WEST SIDE STORY---photo released of Stephen Sondheim, who wrote the lyrics for the 1957 Broadway musical, and Steven Spielberg on the set of the remake movie.

RED NOTICE---Ryan Reynolds will co-star with Dwayne Johnson and Gal Gadot in the Netflix movie about an Interpol agent pursuing the world's top art thief.

LOOK WHO'S TALKING---Screen Gems remake of the 1989 movie is underway. The original movie starred John Travolta, Kirstie Alley and Bruce Willis.

THE LITTLE MERMAID---as the controversy of black actress/singer Halle Bailey playing Ariel in the remake movie continued, Jodi Benson, the original voice of Ariel, supported Bailey, "We need to be storytellers. And no matter what we look like on the outside, no matter our race, our nation, the color of our skin, our dialect, whether I’m tall or thin, whether I’m overweight or underweight, or my hair is whatever color, we really need to tell the story. And that’s what we want to do, we want to make a connection to the audience. So I know for Disney that they have the heart of storytelling, that’s really what they’re trying to do. They want to communicate with all of us in the audience so that we can fall in love with the film again.”

THE STAND---Marilyn Manson has joined the cast of the CBS All Access miniseries in an undisclosed role. Manson has also recorded a new version of "The End" by The Doors for the miniseries.

STRANGER THINGS---Netflix announced that Season 3 is breaking records, "40.7 million household accounts have been watching the show since its July 4 global launch — more than any other film or series in its first four days. And 18.2 million have already finished the entire season."

THE FUGITIVE---Quibi tv series reboot of the David Janssen tv series and Harrison Ford movie is underway in which blue collar worker Mike Russo and his family are on a Los Angeles subway which is destroyed by a bomb. Russo's family dies, and he is accused of being the terrorist bomber as a legendary cop pursues him.

THE BIG LEBOWSKI---the official title for the John Turturro spinoff movie is THE JESUS ROLLS.

THE SOCIETY---Netflix renewed the series for Season 2.

AMERICAN HORROR STORY: 1984---Sarah Paulson is not returning for the new season.

MAJOR CRIMES---Entertainment one/David Ayer true crime tv anthology series underway with each season focusing on a single case.

CUPHEAD---Netflix animated tv series underway based on the game.

TRIVIA---in STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME, Jane Wiedlin of The Go-Gos appeared as Trillya, the USS Shepard's communications officer, who transmits a distress call as the massive alien probe passes by. Her distress call is received in Starfleet Headquarters.

Jane Wiedlin commented on being a Trekkie, "Oh, my God! STAR TREK was the highlight of the week for my family when I was growing up. I have older brothers and sisters, otherwise I don’t know if I ever would’ve heard about the show. But we watched every episode when they were originally aired, and then we would recreate the episodes. We even made our own STAR TREK movies with Super 8 cameras, and I’d kill to get copies of those films. I don’t know what became of them. But, yeah, I’ve been a geek girl since the 60’s."
She said about being in THE VOYAGE HOME, '"I had just gone solo from The Go-Go’s. I had a new manager and he was trying to think of new things for me do besides making pop music. He suggested I try acting and he got me an agent, and I started doing auditions. When I heard STAR TREK IV IV was going to be made I freaked out and just basically begged, begged, begged. I said, “Please get me in that movie. I don’t care who I am in it. I don’t care if I’m wearing an alien mask and you can’t see it’s me. I just need to be in a STAR TREK movie.” They did that and, luckily, the casting agent had a good sense of humor and I did get that little part. And it was one of the highlights of my career to be directed by Leonard Nimoy, even if it was just for a few minutes. It was so thrilling."'

Odd to see Sondheim in a T-shirt. I hope his Bunuel musical will eventually be staged or at least recorded.

There was a workshop of the first act at the Public, with Marc Kudisch, among others, but I understand that was about a year ago, and since then Sondheim and the original book writer have parted, and the Public removed it from their 2019-20 season, without explanation.
So that leaves a script up in the air.
I expect there may eventually be a recording of whatever songs exist, but, at this rate, it will probably be a posthumous effort.

He was 27 at the time of the WSS Broadway premiere. He'll be 90(!) next March.
