This is great. Music from FIRESTARTER and RISKY BUSINESS performed acoustically by music students.

Wow, great stuff! Super-talented kids. Particularly impressed by the clarinet player in "Love on a Real Train"; talk about stamina!

Great!

It reminds me of Steve Reich's "Music For 18 Musicians" which was acoustic as well and has passages that surely were more than mere influences for TD's "Risky Business" and even "Logos". And this was released in 1978.

I'm having a hard time here linking to YouTube videos, but it's on there. If you don't know it, give it a listen! It's a great composition. Jump in at around the 20 minute mark and you'll hear what i mean :-)

Best,
Burnie

Steve Reich - Music for 18 Musicians

One of my favorite pieces of music ever.

Has the opposite been attempted for Reich -- i.e. his acoustic, minimalist music transcribed for electronics?

And David Bowie's for that matter. But to answer your question: yes.

Although a recording is still unavailable.

John, thanks for sharing that story on the Music for 18 Machines. Much as I love electronic music, the (short) excerpts I could find online have a relentlessness that isn't comparable with any of the acoustic versions I've heard.

Especially with the clarinets & voices, the quality of breathing is essential to the music. In this version, the patterns are a steamroller rather than the ocean waves I've always heard in the acoustic versions. Even so, I would enjoy hearing the full work.

Amusing to me that I had almost the opposite reaction to the well-done acoustic versions of the TD numbers at the top of the thread. Just as I missed the acoustic quality in the Reich, I missed the electronic quality in these versions.

Finally checked out those videos. Those students are both impressive and also look like they're having a great time. Very cool!

Thanks for sharing!

Chris Franke said in a recent comment that he had not seen the clips before and that he found the trumpet player on Love On A Real Train especially brave.
