One of my favorite scenes in David Lynch's masterpiece Blue Velvet is the hallucinogenic time-lapse montage that occurs when Isabella is singing "Blue Velvet" on stage with a quartet; and then in the second stanza, she is suddenly finishing a Lynch/Badalamenti tune "Blue Star," with only Angelo on stage backing her.

This montage appears on my copy of the Blue Velvet CD as it appears in the film, clocking in at 1:49.

But what is interesting is how it is listed on the back cover of the CD. It indicates that "Blue Velvet" runs for 1:19 and "Blue Star" runs for 1:55.

This would suggest that, at some point while planning the CD, they considered using significantly longer edits of each tune.

Does anyone know if the longer versions ever appeared on a Blue Velvet CD or LP? Have the longer versions been officially released elsewhere, either on LP, CD, or as downloads on David Lynch's website?

I don't know, Onya, but it's so nice to see you back and to be able to call you by that name and not that Pie Racket moniker.

I want to talk about the La-La Land "Rosemary's Baby" and "The Sentinel". When you're ready. That Badalalamenti dude was one mean Mafia guy in that film he acted in.

Thank you Graham. I was dealing with some family issues and trying to not get distracted by the InterWebz.

Was Badalamenti in a film?

Bump the threads on "Rosemary's Baby" and "The Sentinel" and I'll chime in.

Onya, I'm not checking "the computer" for solid data, as the kids don't say, but I think I remember Badalamenti as a kind of scary Mafia guy in MULHOLLAND DRIVE. Is that the one where he gets a bit intense about the state of his coffee?

The most relevant SENTINEL thread is here - https://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=135383&forumID=1&archive=0

The ROSEMARY'S BABY thread (which you started, and to which we'd both like to contribute) is at https://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=112192&forumID&1&archive=0

Hoping that the real-life family stuff wasn't too long-term traumatic and that we'll be seeing you here more often.

Hi Onyabirri,

I remember that timing discrepancy from the Varese BLUE VELVET CD. Unfortunately, I think what we have here is simply an error in the track timing that went unnoticed - a problem that cropped up all too often on those early Varese releases (SUPERGIRL and ROBOCOP also had proofing errors). I think it was an abortive attempt to track the timing of the two songs and also the timing of the full medley.

While I'm sure it is not out of the question that longer versions of those pieces may exist - I think the printed timings are more reflective of a production typo error than a secret clue leading to a longer track. I guess only Varese and Angelo know for sure!

Oh...and yes it was MULHOLLAND DR. that featured Badalamenti as a coffee-fixated mobster.

Thanks! I also wondered if the timings on the cover were supposed to represent start points in the medley, but even then, they don't work.

I would love to hear the full versions of both songs. I'm sure they exist someplace.

On the recent Criterion Collection release of BLUE VELVET, in one of the supplements - BLUE VELVET REVISITED - there is Super-8 footage of a take of Isabella Rossalini singing the entire song, "Blue Velvet". That is apparently the only release of the film version of the song in its entirety. (Well, almost - the very end of the song is faded out)

Yes, I have this, and this in part inspired my question.

But will we ever hear the rest of "Blue Star?"

A recording of "Blue Star" has surfaced on Youtube. Entitled simply "Blue Star - Isabella Rossellini" it appears to be a rehearsal recording with (I assume) Angelo Badalamenti on piano and runs just over two minutes. Sorry I haven't mastered the art of posting Youtube clips or I would set it up for you.
