He's got two shows on UK TV at the moment (there's also a period drama on Sunday nights, Gentleman Jack, I think it's called).
This one is a scathing and biting comedy/drama satire which could be subtitled 'Britain Goes To Sh!t'.
It's a slightly futuristic attack on everyday society and how screwed up everything is/becoming.
It's both quite funny/touching and hard-hitting.
Gold (who has worked with the producers since year dot) has scored it in a more modern way than we're used to hearing from him.
Lots of bleeps and bloops amongst the thriller style scoring and a children's chanty chorus for the bigger moments. It's very effective at times and shows some nice contrast from the composer.
He is (by his own admission) a lazy git when it comes to producing releases of his scores, so it'll probably be a long time, or never, if any music is released from this series.
Anyone else watching it?

We watch it and the wife loves it, whereas I'm afraid I end up looking at my phone. Sorry! I have noticed certain moments. The cast are good, and I see the closest thing to Russell T Davies' period of Doctor Who out of everything else he's done since, stylewise. All that using the news bulletins etc. The whole thing feels familiar from those years of Who from 2005 - 09.

The music though for me (speaking as a fan of his Who work especially for this writer/producer) comes under his 'mundane' section along with his stuff for things like Scott and Bailey. Bit dull for me.

Whereas Gentleman Jack shows his more adventurous side, and would be a far more listenable prospect away from the drama itself. The reasons for this are obvious of course and I understand them. But it's the difference between a purchase or non-purchase.

But you're right about the release or otherwise of his work. I suppose it shows a lack of ego if nothing else! But it is rather annoying. I was hoping to get hold of his music for the Jeremy Thorpe scandal serial, which I liked (A Very British Scandal I think?).

I've been watching it and loving it, I think it's magnificent sci-fi, with the most fully realized future world I've seen since Minority Report and a frighteningly plausible descent of the West into chaos and totalitarianism.

I especially love how Davies is able to use the miniseries format to have the actual focus of the show (Emma Thompson's rise as a fascist dictator) take place in the background, while all the family drama unfolds in the foreground, and they're unaware of the importance of a lot of the events on the news until it's too late.

I really enjoy the score and checked the thread hoping there might be a download-only release or something. smile

Although I found last nights (final) episode to be a bit of an anti-climax, after the previous 5 weeks' build-up (too easy and contrived in all it's resolutions), I must say, the final, lengthy music score track by Gold was phenomenal.
Like a brilliant merging of Phillip Glass and Gold's own sensibilities, with a modern vibe, it was startlingly good stuff that I really hope makes it out into the listening world.

Caught this some months ago.

Annnnnd … me no likey; no, not at all.

Just Davies & Gold flashing their overcompensatory schticks (honed to gaudy perfection on Who) in public again for all the world to point and laugh at.

An overwrought (speculative) kitchen sink drama amplified by hyperactive editing and urgent, portentous music for that OMG!!! "it's the end of the world and we know it" effect.

Terribly silly stuff.

Okay, Kev. I didn't notice this topic before today, so I will cut and past what I wrote on the other side of the FSM board.


Now this is a rather heavy series. The six episodes take place between 2019 and 2029, and viewers must tolerate A LOT of political satire. It definitely satirizes our current American government. This series also takes scathing satirical shots at the post-Brexit English government. This series can be offensive to people depending upon their political perspectives.

Viewers see the impact of international and governmental changes on what is described as a “typical” British family. Several times we almost quite the series, but it would end with some tragedy that always made us return. We didn’t warm up to the family for at least three episodes, and we could only understand the dialogue from about half of the family. Certain accents evaded us. Eventually, we started to care about this rather quirky family. The series also takes on other topics like climate control and most obviously, immigration issues.

Murray Gold was the composer. At times, I hated the music, but at other times, his music was gorgeous.

Have to say that I love Emma Thompson even though she played a reprehensible character.

The acting was great, and the satire was caustic. The future was pretty scary.
