    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72tww6

    Highlights:
  • 2:13/4:27 in.
  • 5:24 in.
  • 7:32 in.
  • 12:01 in.
  • 21:19/24:19 in. Just a coupe of short plucky cues. Bell really excels at these.
  • 25:07 in.
  • 28:40/30:25/31:05 in.
  • 41:40 in.

    "The Taxman Cometh"
    By: Richard Markowtiz
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72tx0j

    Highlights:
  • 11:04 in.
  • 25:13 in.
  • 29:45 in. What's the name of that TV series this cue is parodying the famous theme from?
  • 31:43 in.

    Guest-starring Max Wright.

    "From the Horse's Mouth"
    By: David Bell
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2lE6m-1jPc

    Highlights:
  • 1:19 in. Soft, warm-ish string work.
  • 7:52/9:05 in. Briefly contains Richard Markowitz's theme from the spin-off series "The Law and Harry McGraw"; been a year, at the time, that the spin-off was cancelled, but unlike other shows that had spin-off characters vanish, MSW really stuck with some of them!
  • 10:01 in.
  • 28:27 in.
  • 41:25 in.
  • 42:49 in. Also contains the theme.

    "The Prodigal Father"

"Where Have You Gone, Billy Boy?"
    By: Richard Markowtiz
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxwwEVFkf30

    Highlights:
  • 43:01 in.

Not only were they a fan of keeping Harry McGraw alive, they were also fond of keeping a character alive from a back-door pilot that never went to series; he's been in several episodes since, including this one, sometimes taking the show over, with Jessica being briefly seen or not seen at all.

For the guys here: 7:25 in. You're welcome.

"Dumb luck, Lieutenant, pure and simple."

    "Thursday's Child"
    By: Richard Markowtiz
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mz41JoFF4Q

    Highlights:
  • 44:29 in.

  • 14:39 in.
  • 20:36 in.
  • 32:55 in.
  • 37:40 in.
  • 42:48 in.

A lot of soft material for the Amish.

    "Tainted Lady"
    By: David Bell
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7wGAzuZ6oo

This is Bell's final effort for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 1:56 in.
  • 24:18:/26:17/40:01 in.

"The Skinny According to Nick Cullhane"
    By: Richard Markowitz
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhbrSjr4W-s

This is Markowitz's final effort for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 1:18/4:24 in.
  • 5:33 in.
  • 8:00 in.
  • 11:35 in.
  • 13:54 in.
  • 19:02 in.

Jessica says to Harry that's it's been a "long time, no see", but he was just with her a few episodes ago.

I forgot to note them, but some cues briefly use "The Law and Harry McGraw" theme.

Fourth Wall breaking in the end of the episode.

    SEASON 8:

Sorry, all loads so far for this season, are only up at Dailymotion. I know, it sucks. If you are one of those people who pay for view/downloads at online stores, you can go there.

There has been a major composer shake up. This isn't like "Falcon's Crest" which evidently realized it's mistake and brought the composers back after one season or so; Bell and Markowitz didn't come back.
Noticeably cheaper and more synth sounding. Also doesn't fit like the music of David Bell. Must have been a budgetary thing.
Not bad music, but just not of the same quality, and some of it sounds dated to the 1980's, even though it's 1991 this season.

    "Bite the Big Apple"
    By: Jeff Sturges
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72txvm

  • 24:15 in.
  • 25:25/27:09/30:14 in.
  • 31:35 in.
  • 41:49 in.
  • 45:04 in.

"He was very seriously murdered." (you know, as opposed to just regular murder)

  • 11:12 in.
  • 18:52 in.
  • 20:50 in.
  • 32:24 in.
  • 33:53 in.

    "Lines of Excellence"
    By: Jeff Sturges
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72tyi

    Highlights:
  • 1:19 in.
  • 33:45 in.

    "Judge Not"

    Highlights:
  • 8:23 in.
  • 18:11 in.
  • 31:48 in.
  • 4250 in.

19:30 in: "They hid people down here in the civil war".
In a large room with two LARGE windows? How do you hide people in a room where the enemy can look into the windows, or if they can't, demand access to the room with large windows they hadn't been in yet? AND a chimney!

    Continuing SEASON 8:

All episodes this season are by Jeff Sturges.

    "Terminal Connection"
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72tyrj

    Highlights:
  • 1:19 in. That's one weird-looking jet.
  • 11:39 in.
  • 16:36 in.

    "A Killing in Vegas"
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72tywu

    Highlights:
  • 1:20 in.
  • 4:01 in. Big jazzy swing band piece.
  • 7:28 in. Casino source music.
  • 12:40 in.
  • 20:46 in.
  • 24:09 in.
  • 29:48 in.
  • 33:54 in.

Some of the cues sound like he's posthumously auditioning for "Vega$".

    "The Committee"
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72tz4p

    Highlights:
  • 32:42 in. I' probably skip this cue on a set of season eight scoring.

The cue after the opening credits, sounds like it's tracked from a prior Sturges-scored episode.

And episode like this makes me wish they hadn't gotten rid of David Bell. :-(

    "The List of Yuri Lermentov"
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72tz8e

    Highlights:
  • 1:20 in. A cue that opens big and rather bold, making you think of a science fiction space film.
  • 6:36 in.
  • 8:33 in.
  • 20:12 in.

    "Danse Diabolique"
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72tzd5

    Highlights:
  • 1:18 in. Music for a silent ballet on an old recording.
  • 11:10 in.*
  • About 33:20 in.
  • 40:21 in.

    * = I'd like to be inserted into that scene wit the girl...

About 23:30 in: That's classical music, right? If it's not and it's original scoring, then that would be a highlight, too.

    "The Witch's Curse"
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72tzj0

    Highlights:
  • 11:02 in.
  • 19:25 in.
  • 23:23 in.
  • 37:06 in.

    "Incident in Lot 7"
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72tzma

    Highlights:
  • 1:19 in.
  • 10:29 in. Including a quote from the stabbing music by Bernard Herrmann from the score to "Psycho", as a studio head points out the house from the film.
  • 17:27 in.
  • 20:57 in. Also includes a quote of the stabbing music from "Psycho".
  • 37:23 in.*

Sigh. If this had been scored by David Bell, we'd have gotten another Herrmann-homage score, well done with an orchestra (like he did in a prior season). Sigh again. :-(

    * = His speech about what isn't fair, could be applied to Bell and Markowitz!

For the guys here: 7:53 in. You're welcome.

Guest-starring Ron Glass (Shepherd Book from "Firefly")

Note: The scene "Psycho" that Jessica watches, the stairs stabbing scene, sounds like it's been re-recorded and made to sound old; it didn't sound right, so I compared it to the clip from the film on Youtube and they don't sound the same. Either that or another take was used.

    "The Monte Carlo Murders"
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72tzrf

    Highlights:
  • 1:20 in.
  • 3:14 in.
  • 11:42 in. Sounds like something that could have come out of a later season of "In the Heat of the Night".
  • About 35:25 in.
  • 39:26 in.
  • 45:12/46:03 in.

Guest-starring Patrick Bauchau. and Bo Kopkins.

    "Tinker, Tailor, Liar, Thief"
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72tzuy

    Highlights:
  • 0:00 in.
  • 1:19 in.
  • 5:08 in.
  • 7:40/9:31 in.
  • 12:25 in.
  • 18:45 in.
  • 21:56 in.
  • 26:57 in.
  • 45:26 in.

    "Ever After"
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72tzyu

    Highlights:
  • 1:19 in.
  • 32:34 in.
  • 39:27 in.

    Guest-starring Kate Mulgrew.

"To the Last Will I Grapple with Thee"
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72u043

    Highlights:
  • 1:18 in.
  • 21:24 in.

Jessica: "Obsession has always extracted a terrible price, lieutenant."

    "Programmed for Murder"
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72u082

    Highlights:
  • 1:19 in.
  • 5:10 in.
  • 23:47 in.
  • 40:28 in.

    "Day of the Dead"
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72u0c1

    Highlights:
  • 1:19 in. Featuring a Spanish guitar.
  • About 8:00 in.
  • 18:40/19:27/21:46 in.
  • 29:28 in.

    "Angel of Death"
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72u0fs

    Highlights:
  • 7:00 in.
  • 16:56/17:20 in.
  • 20:49 in. With a haunting wordless female solo vocal. A little over four minutes.

    "Badge of Honor"
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72u0l4

    Highlights:
  • 0:00/1:19 in.
  • 2:28 in.
  • 3:53 in.
  • 6:26/7:30 in.
  • 11:02 in. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 14:34 in.
  • 20:35 in.
  • 22:42 in.
  • 39:15 in.
  • 44:44/45:25 in.

A lot of wistful and pleasant cues in this episode. Most enjoyable episode score, over all, from Sturges.

"Oh, I wouldn't try to figure her out, sir; I never have." (to the police captain, about Jessica)

    "Murder on Madison Avenue"
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3pf1ac

    Highlights:
  • 6:40 in.
  • in.

    Guest-starring John Hillerman.

I'll probably have to split season nine up for Friday and Saturday, and -- pending available loads -- finish the show Wednesday. And then I'll go back and finish another TV series I was working on that I had to stop because of no loads (now there are loads).

Many many years ago one of the CBS "60 Minutes" spin-offs ran a segment on the music of "Murder, She Wrote" (or it could have been on the Sunday AM CBS news program). There was a discussion with one of the show's producers about the importance of the music -- and as I recall there was an extended section in which one of the composers (Bell I believe?) conducted a score in a recording booth to image playback. There were several interactions with the producer who asked for minor revisions, etc.

Has this episode ever surfaced online? I'd love to see it again. One of my best friends knew Bell back in the day and alerted me to the TV show or I'd probably have missed it back then.

    SEASON 9:

Composer shakes up again, though Jeff Sturges is staying onboard (for now).

Last season even the opening credits sounded cheaper. This appears to be fixed (I'll have to do a direct comparison to know for sure).

I know, Dailymotion sucks, but all loads for this season are only up here.

    "Murder in Milan"
    By: Jonathan Tunick
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72u0ud

    Highlights:
  • 5:30 in.
  • About 22:00 in.*
  • About 32:20 in.
  • 34:17 in.
  • 37:10 in.
  • 41:31 in.

The quality of the scoring has shot up with Tunick.

    * = For the guys here. You're welcome.

    "Family Secrets"
    By: Jeff Sturges
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72u0z4

    Highlights:
  • 1:30 in.
  • 3:58 in.
  • 26:56 in.

    ALREADY COVERED AS A ONE-OFF.
    "The Mole"
    By: John Cacavas

    "The Wind Around the Tower"
    By: Bruce Babcock
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72u17k

    Highlights:
  • 1:19 in.
  • 8:19 in.
  • 12:14 in.
  • 20:50 in.
  • 32:41 in. And the cue shortly after it.
  • 38:14 in.
  • 42:02/43:26 in.

Mostly scoring evoking music you'd associate with Ireland.

5:27 of score is on the obscure Brue Babcock promo (which, thankfully, I have!). I don't have it handy, so I can't identify which cues are on it.

This score was nominated for an Emmy (I got to say, aside from the Irish flavor, I don't get it; there have been better episode scores that deserved a nomination). The other contenders that year:
    "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles"
Episode: "Young Indiana Jones and the Scandal of 1920"
    Composer: Joel McNeely
    WINNER

    "Quantum Leap"
Episode: "Lee Harvey Oswald, Part 1"
    Composer: Velton Ray Bunch

    "The Simpsons"
    Episode: "Treehouse of Horror III"
    Composer: Alf Clausen

    "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles"
    Episode: "Vienna, 1908"
    Composer: Laurence Rosenthal

    "The Dead File"
    By: Jonathan Tunick
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72u1ak

    Highlights:
  • 31:27 in.
  • 35:02 in.
  • 38:07 in.
  • 40:58 in.
  • 42:55 in.
  • 45:23 in.

    "Night of the Coyote"
    By: Jonathan Tunick
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72u1ef

    Highlights:
  • 1:28 in.
  • 11:33 in.
  • 13:25/39:22 in. Solo Ethnic woodwind for an Indian sheriff. And then some more with other instruments.

"Sugar & Spice, Malice & Vice"
    By: Steve Dorff
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72u1hr

    Highlights:
  • 3:57 in.
  • 5:41 in.
  • 2314 in.
  • 26:45 in.
  • 38:27 in.
  • 39:24 in.
  • 45:29 in.

    "The Classic Murder"
    By: Jeff Sturges
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72u1kl

    Highlights:
  • 1:20 in. Brief jazzy stage-show like music. This is the only cue in the episode like this.
  • 8:27 in.
  • 18:46/20:45 in.
  • 24:56 in.
  • 33:54 in.
  • 36:30 in.

Another episode of a TV series built upon bullshit.

    "A Christmas Secret"
    By: Jonathan Tunick
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72u1nn

    Highlights:
  • 1:20 in. Christmas classic "Joy to the World".
  • 11:48 in. Another Christmas classic
  • 13:08 in.
  • 20:55 in. Short eerie arrangement of "Tis' the Season to be Jolly" (or what ever it's called).
  • 23:34 in.
  • 38:56 in.
  • 43:40 in. Another Christmas classic.

A score to a Christmas episode of a TV series needs -- in my opinion -- to check two boxes:
    1. Arrangements of Christmas classics (doesn't matter if they are unique arrangements, though that is welcome).

    2. Some cues should give the listener what I call "warm fuzzies".

    "The Sound of Murder"
    By: Steve Dorff

  • 42:33 in.

    "Double Jeopardy"
    By: Jeff Sturges
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72u1x0

    Highlights:
  • 0:00 in.
  • 1:22/3:09 in.
  • 20:10 in.
  • 23:17 in.
  • 28:35 in. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 42:36 in.

    Guest-starring Robert Beltran.

    "Dead Eye"
    By: Steve Dorff
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72u22m

    Highlights:
  • 0:00 in.
  • 3:14 in.
  • 6:43 in.
  • 9:47 in. Joining a cue already in progress.
  • 22:25 in.
  • 25:43 in.
  • 37:41 in. And after the commercial break.
  • 41:35 in.

    SEASON 10:

    "A Death in Hong Kong"
    By: Bruce Babcock
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9qYSWO4n6E

    Highlights:
  • 1:22 in. Some cool music for Hong Kong. I might have expected something like this to come from Goldsmith.
  • 3:59 in.
  • 12:01 in.
  • 20:10 in.
  • 23:28 in.
  • 25:56 in.
  • 31:46 in.
  • 39:27 in.
  • 43:08 in.
  • 45:31 in.

there's a cue titled "Hong Kong" under "Murder, she Wrote" on the obscure ?Babcock promo; I'm hoping it's that opening cue! I don't have the promo handy and it's been, sadly, many many years since I've heard it (that needs to be rectified!).

    "Bloodlines"
    By: Steve Dorff

  • 1:19 in. Smooth country-esque music.
  • 2:58 in. Restrained horse-racing music.
  • 39:24 in.
  • 43:08 in.

15:40 in: A good thing we saw him stumble out of the horse pen, 'cause it sounded like he was masturbating in there.
