Derek Meddings did a great job in The Spy Who Loved Me as well. The tanker and the subs being "swallowed" looks great too. It would have won best FX that year if Star Wars had not been out that same year.

I kinda remember that.

His work on Superman still remains incredible.

I like this image of him working on this fantastic miniature set from Goldeneye, bottom of the page linked
Superior to CGI in every way. Read this whole blog too, great.

Maybe you're just grumpy by nature....

Ooo, did I hit a nerve there?

Nope, not even a little.

Call it a bit of healthy age related cynicism, but I just don't think we're going through a golden age of cinema right now (maybe you disagree). There's some amazing stuff on TV (HBO & the rest of them), so it could be that's where all the talent is these days. To paraphrase Mr. Wilde - It would take a heart of stone not to laugh when yet another superhero film hits the skids.

Nah, I don't think we're going through a golden age of anything other than Old Man "Get Off My Lawn" crankiness about pretty much everything. At least on the FSM Message Board\.

There's plenty of talent in motion pictures. They just are aimed at what the general audience is asking for. Everything comes in phases, but the age of the blockbuster is a long one. I just don't see the need to be happy when something fails. Such a waste of happiness. I prefer to be more positive and ignore films I don't like. It's just entertainment.

you have a balanced view, which is good, but I confess, I have some pleasure out of some movies failing. But it is actually not a sadistic thing, Hollywood is a simple machine, as long as it see people keep pushing the little button for and paying $12 for the widget they continue to make the same plastic thing. Only when they take a financial hit is there any change. We are better off not accepting bad movies, and better off in movie-dom if less bad movies are made because they fail. Hollywood is incredibly dumb with some of this, making movies that need to make $800 million to break even, it is crazy. More than a few are bound to red-ink.

This X Men picture is doomed to red ink, and the Godzilla picture is too

Yup, it looks like Godzilla has well underperformed (oh joy!). Warner must be very worried about next years, Godzilla v Kong. The best thing I've read about it, is that it's better than the last Godzilla film. I love the fact that with CGI any creature & world can be created, but blimey, is Godzilla & that tired old franchise, Jurassic Park the best they can do (I really enjoyed, Kong: Skull Island). It's like the scripts are being written by accountants.

Agree, they need to get off this idea that the more money they spend on a movie, and the more CG work they better the film will be and more people will see it. CG is fine, but the Derek Meddings and Doug Trumbull's and Ellenshaws and that kind of visual effects are the true masters.

Today's producers and directors just go for the gimmicks. It makes for lazy film-making. The T-Rex scene in the original Jurassic Park is still amazing and intense. I'm totally sucked into the drama.
