Since we lost Footlight and J&R Music world - not to mention Virgin and Tower - I can't think of a decent place.

I haven't been to NYC in ages, but I will be back next week. Anyone familiar with any spots that are good to check out for new or used soundtrack CDs?

Academy Records #1 (18th street between 5th and 6th aves) is the best.
Academy Records #2 (12th street between 1rst and A aves
Book Off (45th street between 5th and 6th aves) CDs and DVDs only
Westsider Records (72nd Street between Broadway and West End Ave) Mostly LPs
With exception of Book Off, the above is mostly LP friendly. Academy #1 is the last spot that has rare CD gems from time to time.
Ive seen (what appears to be) massive collectors bringing their stash over the last year. Think OOP Varese Club, Intrada etc titles. They come and go fast. The prices are often VERY FAIR! Its hit or miss.

On 54 White Street, west of Broadway, The Archive of Contemporary Music (ARC) is having their annual summer used record, CD, video, misc. sale beginning this Saturday, June 8 at 11am and ends on Sunday, June 23rd.
They do sell soundtrack-CDs, but it’s a small collection and very few score-only titles. In the past, I’ve seen Intrada titles like "Alien" and "Harry and The Hendersons"—the latter being 3 copies for $3 each. In the past few years, though, I’ve haven’t seen any titles that wow’d me.--even any ones that I've owned, already.
One half of their store-front is devoted to LP’s. They also sell VHS tapes and DVDs. They used to sell the 12’ LaserDiscs, but they stopped doing that.

Hey, I'll be in Boston in about a week. A while back I asked for suggestions and the Pyewacket Formerly Known As Onyibirri suggested Stereo Jacks in Cambridge, but I don't think I'll be able to make it there. Any other suggestions?

I've been going to Academy for 20 years now and yes, it is hit and miss, but you'll find good stuff at a first come and serve basis. Their specialty now is mostly Blu-Rays and Classical albums which they have an abundance of along with a great jazz CD section. It all depends on what you're looking for. They used to have a bargin bin area starting at .99 cents to like 3.99 or something and I'd find a bunch of soundtracks in it. It's been gone for several years now because of space limitations but I found at least 20 or so soundtracks in it one day in 2016 and just cleaned out what was left of the section which at the time wasn't much. Now that .99 cents and up section is predominately pop, rock, metal, etc. I've built my collection from there soundtrack, jazz and Blu Ray/DVD wise, so you'll certainly find something especially if you have the money to spend here and believe me, you'll need it as everytime I go there, I usually end up shelling out between 50 and 100 bucks easy.
I also go to Book Off and that is a major league hit or miss place especially in terms of the conditions of the CD's themselves. I always definitely check to see how badly scratched or non scratched they are. Once in a while you'll find some sealed copies but that is very, very rare. They will not refund you or give you some excuse about "they're like a small company and that the CD's do play despite their condition", which is what happend to me one time and got an exchange after haggling for 10 minutes. The other day I saw a copy of the "Crusing" soundtrack on CD which was very rare, which was around 32 bucks. Should've popped for it since it's gone now. Ah well!
If you want to take the risk, give it a shot you'll never know what you'll find.  I'll have to consider going myself next week.

Sorry not much. Sad to say a huge city like NYC has next to nothing left in book stores, record stores, movie theaters, few department stores, etc.. However, there are plenty of expensive places to eat and drink.
The Strand is a city institution. Plenty of people here have already made suggestions about record stores. We have the IFC Center, Angelika, BAM. Not to mention Macy’s, Bloomingdales, and a giant new Nordstrom’s that opened up at Columbus Circle.
It’s not the 1970’s anymore and the city isn’t impervious to the changes the rest of the country has seen but everything you mentioned we don’t have — we do.
