Caldera Records is proud to present the score for the motion picture “Ambition” from 1991, directed by Scott Goldstein, featuring music by Leonard Rosenman.
Actor and writer Lou Diamond Phillips developed a story about an aspiring writer who has trouble finding a job, and has to support himself – as most aspiring writers do – by working odd jobs. His character Mitchell Osgood runs a bookstore when one day he stumbles across a potentially interesting story. If he can investigate and write it down, so Mitchell thinks, it could be his big break as a journalist. The subject of his investigation is a man named Albert Merrick, a serial killer who is up for parole. Who is this man, Mitchell wonders, and what motivated him to commit the awful crimes he was sentenced for?
One of the stars of the film is, undoubtedly, a man behind the scenes: Leonard Rosenman. It was clear to Rosenman and Scott Goldstein that the score should have a progressive, rather than conventional harmonic structure. They agreed that this would help to underscore Merrick’s (the antagonist) horrific, troubling visions and this approach would help capture his state of mind musically. Goldstein suggested Rosenman play him some of his concert music as a blueprint for “Ambition”. Encouraged to be able to draw upon his “progressive” work for the concert stage, Rosenman presented Goldstein with “Foci”, a work for chamber orchestra that the composer had written in 1981 and revised in 1983. Goldstein loved what he heard and commenced to use “Foci” as temp music for “Ambition”. “Foci” is an atonal piece, complex and full of anxiety – exactly what Goldstein needed for his motion picture.
The 31st CD-release of Caldera Records – a world premiere – features a detailed booklet-text by Stephan Eicke and elegant artwork by Luis Miguel Rojas. The CD was produced by Stephan Eicke and John Elborg.

I'd never even heard of AMBITION, but I do love most of what Rosenman did, and this sounds pretty interesting. The great thing about being on this side of the pond is that we can pick up European releases dirt cheap. Hope all you lot on the other side are having to fork out heavy shipping charges!

That was an attempt at humour - sorry. But yes, very tempted by this. It doesn't sound "exactly the same as everything else he wrote" - I hear a touch of JURIJ in there, and the shifting soundscapes are familiar, but no dum-dum-dum-dums? I hope there's a bit of that on it too.

It's great that labels are still putting out obscure stuff. Caldera's THE BABY was one of favourite recent purchases.

EDIT - My post isn't jumping to the top, so I'm giving it a shove.

EDIT EDIT - That didn't work either. But I do exist.

Sounds good to me. I love Rosenman. We lot order from US distributors so our postage is no issue. The wait for Caldera releases though are quite long usually.

Wow, this is out of left field. I'm curious where the recording came from. Is there a Rosenman or Ferraro archive, or did the filmmaker have a copy? If the former, can we expect more Rosenman?

Sold! Wonderful surprise. Nice momentum after Robocop 2. Rosenman releases are to few and far between.

I like the clip too, but it doesn't sound like "an atonal piece... full of anxiety". Makes me wonder if the clip is like the rest of the score.

That's why we need more than just one...

I didn't know that Rosenman scored this movie - I vaguely remember the video box. Nice surprise, and nice companion purchase at Intrada with Band's Unlucky Charms. That'll be a fun two-fer, fer me, anyway.

Where's "TheFamousEccles", FSM's Rosenman expert?

He might know the source of the recording elements for Ambition.

Never saw this film myself, so I did not know its score was inspired by Rosenman's absolute music.
I recall Eccles discussing Lenny's "Foci" somewhere amidst these threads. Perhaps a recording of LR's Foci was used as the temp track for the film?

Miramax is listed (in IMDB) the distributor of Ambition in the U.S.A., however "EuroVideo" is credited as the German distributor on Ambition with respect to all media formats.
Perhaps Caldera's source for this album comes from EuroVideo in Germany?

Not long before Mr. Ralph Ferraro's passing in 2012, I learned that David Fuller was in contact with him and that the master tapes on Ferraro's 1966 She Beast existed and were anticipated to materialize onto a future album (which still hasn't yet happened).
Maybe Ambition is in the Ferraro archives?

The above is what Zardoz Spoketh - The following is what I speaketh. I mention this fact because sometimes I appear in italics when I don't want to. Anyway, this is me. "Foci" was indeed used as the temp track, as explained in Caldera's first post.

And the whole film is on YouTube, if anyone wants to dip in to it.

My missus says I've got No Ambition whatsoever.
To which I reply, 'it hasn't even been released yet'.

The original master tapes for Ralph Ferraro´s LA SORELLA DI SATANA (SHE BEAST) exist in Sugar´s CAM catalogue in Italy and the title has long been reserved there. So you can probably expect it in the near future either from Beat, Digitmovies or Quartet.

The music publisher for Rosenman´s AMBITION is Lenlen Productions (just look up ASCAP) which is a company in L.A. owned by Rosenman´s widow Judith Gregg Rosenman. So the master tapes for the CD certainly come from the Rosenman estate.

Anyone know how to contact Caledra? Their website comes up as "banned" (whatever that means) and there's some engineering questions I had for them related to this release.
