OBSESSION (COMPLETE FILM SCORE)
Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Music Composed and Conducted by Bernard Herrmann

Newly remastered 1 CD reissue.
Limited Edition of 500 units.
A full-color 24-page CD booklet with liner notes by Daniel Schweiger.

Ref: MBR-151
Release Date: June 6, 2019

In collaboration with Litto Enterprises Inc., Music Box Records is very proud to present the reissue of one of their most ambitious releases yet - a classic Bernard Herrmann score from one of his last efforts and an important milestone in his immense career for Brian De Palma´s classic melodrama Obsession (1976) written by Paul Schrader and starring Geneviève Bujold, Cliff Robertson and John Lithgow.

In a career often spent paying tribute to Alfred Hitchcock with the likes of Dressed to Kill, Blow Out and Body Double, Obsession even today stands as De Palma’s ultimate fever dream homage to the director who’d made Bernard Herrmann a household name as the romantic master of musical suspense during an eight film collaboration, no more so than with 1958s Vertigo. Obsession remains his most fervently romantic, and dare one say innocent attempt to recreate the studio gloss of a time when outright violence and sex were left to the mind’s eye, its rage and sensuality truly made explicit in its music. It’s a powerful, stylistic subtlety that increasingly made Obsession into the filmmaker’s most discerning cult film.

Bernard Herrmann returned to his grandly symphonic style and composed a stunning score, filled with powerful themes, ominously underlined by an organ, or a harp, sometimes with abrupt choral flourishes, in eerie evocations of a mystery. He again created an unusual combination to underscore the drama: a large cathedral organ and timpani as primary musical signature characters, and a small choir of wordless and sighing female voices, horns, winds and strings. The score was nominated for an Oscar for 'Best Original Score' in 1977.

Music Box Records is pleased to present what was CD 1 of the previous 2-CD release (the second CD was simply the release of the original LP album that is not included in this 1-CD release) – the complete score to Obsession. For this new single reissue, the sound of the 2015' Special Archival Edition has been improved and remastered. The complete score has been reconstructed and restored from the best sources available (the 5.1 Music Stem, the original 1976 soundtrack album and a safety copy of the original tapes).

Limited to 500 units, this present reissue includes a 24-page full-color booklet with liner notes by Daniel Schweiger, sharing his comments about the film and the score, including new interviews with editor Paul Hirsch and producer George Litto.

CAMILLE CLAUDEL (EXPANDED)
Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Music Composed by Gabriel Yared

Newly remastered and expanded edition.
12-page CD booklet with French and English liner notes by Gabriel Yared.
Limited Edition of 350 units.

Ref: MBR-149
Release Date: June 6, 2019

In collaboration with Yad Music, Music Box Records presents the newly remastered and expanded edition of Gabriel Yared’s score to the 1988 drama film Camille Claudel, starring Isabelle Adjani and Gérard Depardieu, and directed by French cinematographer turned director Bruno Nuytten.

Adapted from the biography written by Paul Claudel’s granddaughter Reine-Marie Paris, the film was a project initiated by Isabelle Adjani. The film tells the story of the troubled life of French sculptor Camille Claudel and her long relationship with the sculptor Auguste Rodin. Camille Claudel received wide public and critical acclaim, won five César awards including the one for Best Feature Film and contributed to the rediscovery of the sculptress’ works.

To illustrate the artistic and amorous passion of the characters onscreen, Gabriel Yared composed beautiful strings pieces inspired by German postromantic music. This album allows listeners to fully appreciate the many shades of this score by adding several previously unreleased tracks to the original edition. The 12-page booklet by Gabriel Yared gives insight into the scoring process. This is a limited edition of 350 units.

SWOON
Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Music Composed by Nathaniel Méchaly

World Premiere CD Release.
8-page CD booklet with liner notes by Gergely Hubai.

Ref: MBR-161
Release Date: June 6, 2019

Music Box Records releases the CD version of Nathaniel Mechaly's score to the Swedish romantic period musical Swoon (Eld & Lågor) (digital version available through MovieScore Media).

Directed by Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein, the story is a new reimagination of the Romeo and Juliet story with John (Albin Grenholm) and Ninni (Frida Gustavsson) growing up in resentment of each other due to their families’ competing amusement parks. When they meet again as adults in 1940, their attraction is undeniable, but soon enough they must face much harsher enemies than their past…

Following their success on Midnight Sun, French composer Nathaniel Méchaly (of Taken fame) returns for another collaboration with Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein. On the one hand, the music underscores the classic Romeo and Juliet idea with an unabashedly romantic theme, but there are several carnivalesque sections that pay homage to the period and the setting of the story. The album also includes the new song from Lily Oakes entitled “The Keep”.

French composer Nathaniel Méchaly studied music at the Conservatoire National de Région de Musique de Marseille. He started his film music career as an assistant to Oscar-winning composer Gabriel Yared. He is best-known as the composer for the Taken trilogy, starring Liam Neeson. Méchaly, with Japanese composer Shigeru Umebayashi, won Best Original Film Score at the 33rd Hong Kong Film Awards and Best Composer at the 8th Asian Film Awards for The Grandmaster.

The 8-page booklet features liner notes by Gergely Hubai, discussing the film and the score, based on an original interview with the composer.

Down for Mechaly- SWOON. I like his work with Umebayashi. I'll stick with my 2cd Obsession and original Camille Claudel.

For this new single reissue, the sound of the 2015' Special Archival Edition has been improved and remastered.

Can Music Box share some light about what they did to improve the sound of the 2015 edition ?

It would be much appreciated.

Anyone remember how much the 2-CD Obsession cost in USA? $25 $30? Just curious. I didn't get it, but will get this single ost.

The previous release of 2015 (almost just yesterday in soundtrack release terms) was an issue of 3000.
The new "improved and remastered" edition is just 500.
So according to Music Box, at least 2500 of their 3000 Obsession customers are now stuck with an apparently inferior version of the score CD and cannot improve it even if they want too.

Actually I think it's a reflection of the old adage that you can have too much of a good thing!

the good news is that they were able to press 500 copies for those who missed the original issue.

As far as the inferior version is concerned. I am happy to be stuck with it.

Make that 499, since I don't have the old one and will (probably) be getting since one.

Sorry if I literally stole a CD from someone.

Regarding OBSESSION, I've owned the score on LP and three different CDs (one is a rerecording), so of course I've ordered a copy of this "new and improved" one.

I've also owned the film on VHS, laserdisc, MOD, DVD, and Blu-ray.

Couldn't resist as well, and that is despite the unaltered booklet. The sound was great on the previous issue, but I'm always in for any improvements when it comes the Great B.H.

I thought the sound was fine on the first Music Box release. However, that was four years ago, and perhaps the technology has improved since then. Or, perhaps Music Box upgraded portions of the score from a different element?

I'm interested to know what "improved" sound means. Hopefully there will soon be a side-by-side comparison here.

They have to say that, whether it's accurate or not. It's SOP for re-releases of any product.

Seconded on both these posts. I went for years finding myself spellbound by this score on LP before I finally got to see the film in the early days of VHS. A reviewer from Variety or elsewhere was quoted on the LP jacket: "Herrmann could make blank film compelling."
