I know that I don't know a lot of classical music, but now and then I hear a small sample of what I'm sure is a famous piece of music for violins. Often in movies or in a TV show, only this small snippet is played, and I love it. I've not tracked down the title. I would be thrilled if one of you savvy members could tell me the title so that I could listen to the whole piece. I accidently stumbled on it while listening to excerpts from the new CHER Broadway show and its star Jarrod Spector who also did Jersey Boys.

I am pretty sure that it is from Vivaldi's Four Seasons. The problem is I can't remember if it is Winter or Spring.

Wow, mgh, you are so quick. I had tried a few violin cuts on youtube, so I knew it wasn't Spring by Vivaldi. I thought is seemed more like spring than winter, but I just went in and listened to Winter based upon your recommendation, and you are spot on. Thanks. I love that particular snippet.

(And it doesn't even sound like a western score, mgh.wink)

Yup, Winter first movement. The Four Seasons is a collection of four violin concertos (part of a larger work) each named after a season, Spring/Summer/Autumn/Winter. The three movement (fast/slow/fast) concertos are quite short (2-5 minutes a movement) & like a lot of baroque music, is insanely catchy.

Glad to help out. Are sure it isn't a western score? Wasn't it in THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY?

Thanks, Rameau. I think that snippet from Winter that caught my attention is very catchy and used sometimes in movies and TV shows. I'm just starting to listen to other parts of Four Season.

Thanks, Rameau. I think that snippet from Winter that caught my attention is very catchy and used sometimes in movies and TV shows. I'm just starting to listen to other parts of Four Season....

Here in the UK, Antonio Vivaldi's Violin Concerto, Op.8 "Le Quattro Stagioni" a.k.a. The Four Seasons often gets less than the praise it deserves (no evidence, just my perception) which I believe is derived from over-exposure. In particular, the first movement of the first concerto: RV269 in E "La primavera" 1:Allegro has been used / over-used to such a large extent (e.g. inclusion on almost every light-classical compilation album released in the last 50 years ... again, no evidence, just my perception) that it's become bland to many people.

But listen to a well-performed recording of the complete group of four concerti grossi and you'll find a highly satisfying way to pass 40-45 minutes ... and a great introduction into this Italian maestro's repertoire. I have a large number of recordings of his works (including multiple versions of Le Quattro Stagioni) and can highlight the variety along with some favourites.

One such favourite album of mine is a recording by Leonard Bernstein with the New York Philharmonic (1958) of 4 distinct concerti: Flute, RV441, Oboe, RV454, Piccolo, RV443 & Diverse instruments, RV558. The Largo of the Piccolo concerto is incredibly beautiful whilst the opening movement of the Diverse instruments' concerto is so catchy ...

And if you fancy something choral, try his Gloria, RV589 ... very moving.

The downside is that just like the compositions of his fellow Italian, born 350 years later, once you start listening you want to hear more and more ... and he, too, was highly prolific. smile

Thanks for you input, MM.

La primavera" 1:Allegro Based upon your comment, I just listened to this and it was very familiar.
