Zoob, give the latest Goldsmith Odyssey a listen; I think you'll find it interesting. http://goldsmithodyssey.buzzsprout.com/159614/944720-episode-17-thriller-the-poisoner-1961 It would be cool if a Volume 3 is produced, if there could be a "fan requests" section for cues left off of scores represented on the first two volumes (kinda like was on the Star Trek 40th album or Batman TAS Volume 4). There were a couple highlights from "The Poisoner" alone that Leigh now regrets leaving off! There are only four unrepresented Goldsmith scores so there would potentially be room even with Morton Steven's Pigeons from Hell thrown on there too... Yavar

Im also hope that James, Nic and Leigh will decide to do third and last Thriller album. There is still 6 episodes more with Jerry music: 1. "The Cheaters" 2. "Dark Legacy" 3. "What Beckoning Ghost?" 4. "Guillotine" 5. "The Last of the Sommervilles" 6. "The Closed Cabinet" Im hope one day we will get third album. Vol1 and vol2 are fantastic.

I imagine it's very difficult cutting those scores down to suite length, even with the shorter transitional cues taken out. There's always gonna be something left out. Yup, we discussed this on the Goldsmith Odyssey episode. And Leigh is a big fan of this stuff -- he agonized a long time about what cues to include and what cues to leave off. Sorry to rain on this parade, but I am still holding out for a THRILLER box set that contains the original scores by Goldsmith, Stevens and Rugolo. Oh well, I will keep hoping:-) I hope too, but it seems likely that all that survives of the original recordings of the Thriller scores at this point is M&E. If the Tadlow folks knew about original tracks surviving I have my doubts they would have produced one much less two newly recorded albums. At least Rugolo made an album of his Thriller work at the time of the show... And I'm waiting for world premiere recording of Stevens' scores for "Pigeons From Hell", "The Premature Burial", and "Waxworks". Again, listen to this episode of The Goldsmith Odyssey. It sounds like you (and Mr. Audio) may get your wish, at least in part: http://goldsmithodyssey.buzzsprout.com/159614/944720-episode-17-thriller-the-poisoner-1961 Once again, if the Tadlow label commits to more recordings after KING OF KINGS , then I hope they will follow through with THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER. After that the choice is yours. Hate to break it to you, but the choice is already theirs. Leigh and James are the ones putting their time and money into this. I want a new recording of Night of the Hunter as much as you or mgh, and I hope they get to it, but I'd also remind you that the costs of recording these Thriller volumes are far lower than the typical film score, because they're all written for very small orchestras. Leigh donates his time reconstructing these Thrillers...if that's what he chooses to do with his time, that's entirely his right. Before Tadlows produces Thriller Vol. 3, they must re-record Planet of the Apes and Lionheart. Especially the former would be a dream come true, since the score would be much more enjoyable if not in this eardrum-piercing sound quality of the old recording. Bit of a "ditto" here...and another urging to listen to our interview with Leigh. Lionheart almost got done but got outvoted by Thriller, and Leigh expresses relief that that was the case, because Lionheart would not have been the financial success Thriller was, since it would be a far more expensive recording. Now many someday he'll still do a Kickstarter for it, but I'd point out that Lionheart already exists in complete decent-sounding music-only form, conducted by the composer, even if the orchestra's performance is less than perfect. But the remaining four original Goldsmith Thriller scores (and each are quite different) are completely unreleased beyond an old lossy music & effects track. The original Planet of the Apes recording is excellent and IMO just needs the Mike Mattesino treatment to shine. The Varese complete release of the score had disappointing sound I grant you... and actually the earlier Intrada album (which was only a slight expansion I admit, adding "The Hunt" alone) sounds much better. I'm sure Mike could get it to sound better still, if only Varese let him do it. Im also hope that James, Nic and Leigh will decide to do third and last Thriller album. I agree with you, but I think Jerry didn't write original music for those last two (he only did sixteen original scores for the series, total). Are you sure they aren't re-used music? Yavar

Seconded.

Is there any indication that the original Thriller recordings survive, though? If they did, why wouldn't they have been used instead of M&E track on the DVD isolated scores? Yavar

Don't know. Later searches often turn up more (assuming a thorough search was done). Who knows what the studio did and did not want on the DVD's.

Yavar Partly, the reason why I want exactly those two scores to be re-recorded is that I know it will take Varese another decade to release what is long overdue.
