YOUTH WITHOUT YOUTH was Francis Ford Coppola's first film in 10 years (since 1997's THE RAINMAKER).
"Dominic Matei" (Tim Roth) is a 70-year-old Romanian professor who, having spent his life tracing back the roots of language, finds himself failed, alone, suicidal. Change arrives from the heavens. Struck by a lightning bolt, Dominic undergoes a remarkable regeneration: His hair retrieves its reddish luster, new teeth push out his rotting ones, the years fall away until he's a vigorous 35-year-old with a recharged super-cerebellum. Since this is 1938, Hitler becomes interested in this perplexed Übermensch; he eludes the Nazis with the aid of kindly "Prof. Roman Stanciulescu" (Bruno Ganz), but remains unable to ditch a doppelganger (also Roth) teasing him from the other side of the mirror. Life is lonely for the ageless "mutant," yet Dominic finds a mate in "Veronica" (Alexandra Maria Lara), a lovely young tourist who, similarly thunderstruck, may be the reincarnation of his lost love, not to mention an ancient Indian princess.

The score for this 2007 fantasy film was by Osvaldo Golijov and Arturo Castro. It was released by Deutsche Grammophon.

In THE READER, 15-year-old virgin "Michael Berg" (David Kross) starts a summer affair in postwar Berlin with tram conductor "Hanna Schmitz" (Kate Winslet). After sex, Michael reads to her from the works of literary giants, and then this older woman who calls him Kid disappears. Nearly a decade later, now law student Berg is urged by his Holocaust-surviving professor (Bruno Ganz) to attend an actual trial, and re-encounters his former lover as she defends herself against war-crime charges.

Stephen Daldry directed this 2008 drama. Nico Muhly's score was released by Lakeshore.

NIGHT TRAIN TO LISBON is a thriller about a Swiss professor (Jeremy Irons) who, after reading a book by Portuguese doctor "Amadeu Prado," abandons his lectures and buttoned-down life to embark on a romantic adventure. What he finds is a fascinating story that took place during the Portuguese resistance to the dictator Salazar. It concerns some young people, Amadeu (Jack Huston), his best friend "Joao" (played as an adult by Tom Courtenay), "Jorge" (August Diehl/Bruno Ganz), and "Estefania" (Melanie Laurent/Lena Olin), and their lives then and now.

Directed by Bille August, this European co-production got a brief U.S. theatrical release, but was barely seen outside of New York. Annette Focks' score was released in Germany by Alhambra.

In Ridley Scott's 2013 film, Michael Fassbender plays THE COUNSELOR, an attorney who is engaged to the love of his life, "Laura" (Penelope Cruz). Hoping to score some quick cash, he becomes involved with a drug cartel that is moving a large shipment of cocaine via sewage trucks. He has two co-conspirators in this dark, shadowy underworld. One is a businessman/criminal named "Reiner" (Javier Bardem) with a sexed-up, power-hungry, not-as-dim-as-she-seems girlfriend (Cameron Diaz). The other is a middleman named "Westray" (Brad Pitt). Bruno Ganz plays a diamond dealer in the film. Daniel Pemberton's score was released by Milan.

Bruno Ganz's next project was also for Ridley Scott. It was "The Vatican," a pilot for a Showtime series that wasn't picked up. Apparently, the pilot never aired.

Bruno Ganz was one of Europe's finest character actors, who also became a familiar face to American moviegoers. Ganz once told the Danish film journal P.O.V., how people ascribed special powers to him when they recognized him in public, because of playing the angel Damiel in WINGS OF DESIRE. "People in planes said: 'Ah, no need to be afraid, because with you here, nothing can happen. Now we are safe.' Or a mother said to her child: 'Look, there's your guardian angel.' They weren't joking."

Farewell, Damiel.
